First Lessons in Landscape Photography with Julie Kitzenberger

Julie 01
Explore solutions to the challenges beginning landscape photographers encounter in non-technical language and a friendly, supportive atmosphere.

The workshop will consist of 3 components, plus an optional additional day:
  • Friday evening, October 21, 5-7pm at the Hold the Eye studio: A review of photography challenges and solutions
  • Saturday, October 22, all day: A field trip to the Napa and Santa Rosa area at the end of October when the vineyard leaves' colors are changing from yellow to red.  Participants will be guided to discover and capture extraordinary photographic opportunities in ordinary places while observing how a professional photographer scouts and photographs beautiful places.
  • (Optional) Sunday, October 23: One day of shooting not enough? Julie will stay in the area on Sunday, and participants are welcome to join her for some informal image scouting in the Santa Rosa area.
  • Tuesday, November 1, 5 - 7pm at Hold the Eye studio:  A follow-up 2-hour photoshare/critique.  NOTE: This meeting date is subject to change depending on the group's availability.

This workshop is limited to 9 participants, so register today!

Julie will present 10 to 15 images for discussion in the studio as the vehicle to demonstrate simple examples of how to optimize capturing images in the field and how to avoid common pitfalls newer photographers encounter. Challenges and suggested solutions will be reviewed.

The Field trip will be an opportunity to practice the new lessons learned; the photo share will be an opportunity for feedback and continued learning.

This workshop is based on a self-guided show Julie presented at San Jose State to Dr. Gary Klee's Environmental Studies masters students for his “Nature and Conservation Photography” class.

Having participated in numerous photography workshops herself, Julie understands the student perspective and has learned what works to ensure a successful workshop experience.

Experience Level:  Beginning Photographers.

Equipment Requirements: Point & Shoot Camera, Film or Digital SLR Cameras.
If available: Tripod, circular polarizing filter.

Location: Hold The Eye Images Studio (1044 Dell Avenue in Campbell) and the Napa / Santa Rosa area.

About the Instructor:

Julie HeadshotJulie Kitzenberger, a local professional landscape photographer, creates extraordinary images from ordinary places. She teaches photographic image scouting, timing and technique.

Applying talents, experience and learnings from writing, acting and music, Julie explores her desire to capture the moment, recreate the experience and tell the story through photography. With a philosophy to "get it right in the field" so she can spend as little time as possible in front of a computer, Julie's images are not manipulated but instead capture the natural beauty and color of the outdoor world she encounters. When other photographers say, "There's nothing here," she takes that as a challenge to stay longer and find something truly unique; some of her "keepers" were captured when other photographers packed up and went home early.

Julie has been recognized locally for her unique images of landscapes, details in nature, and events, building her reputation as an outdoor photographer.  Selected images from her portfolio are on display in the Stone Griffin Gallery in Campbell and the Los Gatos Museums Gallery in downtown Los Gatos. Julie’s credits include being a veteran of local art shows and events, including solo shows, participation in Silicon Valley Open Studios, juried entry in a Los Gatos Museums show and other local art festivals.
