The Paint Herndon Painting Competition is designed in the spirit of a "day painting” competition, which challenges artists to create works of art in a short period of time.  The competition begins with canvas stamping on Friday evening and Saturday morning and continues through mid-afternoon on Saturday when the finished paintings are due back to ArtSpace for judging.   Please see rules and online registration information below.

 
Adult Competition:  Open to all adults and teens ages 16 and older.
                                   Awards and Prizes - First Place - $350
                                                                       Second Place - $200
                                                                       Third Place - $100
                                   Entry Fee for up to 3 entries: $20, $25 at canvas stamping
                                   Framing is encouraged.

Teen Competition:  Open to all students ages 12 – 17, older teens may choose the Adult or Teen division.
                                   Awards and Prizes - Grand Prize - $50, Other Honors and Awards
                                   Entry Fee for up to 3 entries: $10, $15 at canvas stamping
                                   Framing is optional.

Youth Competition:  Open to all students ages 8 – 11. 
                                    Awards and Prizes - Grand Prize - $50, Other Honors and Awards
                                    Entry Fee for up to 3 entries: $10, $15 at canvas stamping
                                    Framing is optional.

Requirements and Eligibility:

• All artwork must be done on stamped canvases or other stamped material suitable to the medium.
• Artwork in the following mediums will be accepted:  oil, water-based oils, acrylics, watercolors, tempera, pastels, and pen and ink. 
• No photography, electronic, or computer generated/assisted art or reproductions are eligible.
• Mixed media and collage are acceptable as long as they are 50% painted or drawn and do not include photography, electronic, or computer generated/assisted elements.
• All artwork must be original work create by the artist entering the piece.
• Artists may paint or draw subjects of their choice. 
• No nudes will be accepted in the competition.
• No copyrighted source material permitted.
• Artists may paint or draw at any location. 
• Painting on-location is an option as there will be an exhibit of tractors on the lawn next to ArtSpace Herndon.  Several vignettes will be provided as “still life” scenes to paint.
• All artists must register and pay the registration fee to participate.
• Artists may enter up to three (3) pieces of artwork, which are covered by the single entry fee.

Canvas Stamping:  There will be two opportunities for canvas stamping at ArtSpace Herndon, 750 Center Street, Herndon, VA 20170:
                                             Friday, September 2^nd from 5PM-8PM, and
                                             Saturday, September 3^th beginning at 9AM and ending at Noon.

An unlimited number of canvases or other material may be stamped. 
Artist must supply his/her own canvases and materials. 
Canvases may be primed, but must otherwise be blank before stamping. 
 
Submitting Artwork for Judging:  Artwork must be completed, properly labeled, prepared for display, and delivered on time in order to be included in the judging and eligible for prizes.  Artist should return with their completed artwork no later than 3:30pm on Saturday, September 3, 2011 to ArtSpace Herndon, 750 Center Street, Herndon, VA 20170. 
 
Labeling:  The Artist is responsible for labeling the artwork with the Artist’s name, division (adult, teen, youth), the title, medium and price prior to judging. 

Preparation for Display:  Artwork must be prepared for display when submitted for judging. 

• Framing is encouraged in the adult division and optional for the teen and youth divisions.  Gallery wrap is acceptable.   All canvases and frames should be wired for hanging (no clips or saw tooth hangers). 
• Unframed works will be hung by clips on display panels or taped to the wall using painters tape at the artist’s own risk.

Judging:  Professional artists Bill Firestone, and Gennara Moore will serve as judges for the competition.  Judging will begin once all the artwork is checked in and displayed.  The decision of the judges is final.

Awards Presentation:  Prizes will be awarded no sooner than 4:30pm or when the judges have completed their work on the day of the competition, Saturday, September 3, 2011. 

Exhibit Opportunities:  All artists registered for the Painting Competition are invited to exhibit and offer their entries for sale on the day of the competition and during the month of September in the ArtLab at ArtSpace Herndon. 
 
The top prize winners in the Painting Competition will be offered the opportunity to paint and display their artwork at the Herndon Labor Day Festival on Monday, September 5th.  Final selection of artists and work to be displayed at the Festival will be at the discretion of ArtSpace Herndon.

Sales:  All entries will be available for sale at a price of the artist's choosing unless marked "not for sale".   

• Artists entering the competition agree to pay a 25% commission to ArtSpace Herndon for artwork sold during the Painting Competition, at the Herndon Labor Day Festival, or during the exhibit in September.  
•  All artists offering their work for sale will be asked to complete an IRS W-9.  ArtSpace Herndon will handle all sales and pay the applicable sales tax. 

Rights:  The Artist grants ArtSpace Herndon and the Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts the right to photograph and use images of the artist working and images of artwork featured in the Paint Herndon Painting Competition for promotional purposes. 
 
Warrants:  The Artist warrants and represents that s/he owns the copyright to the artwork submitted for this competition and that those art works do not infringe the copyrights, trademarks, rights of privacy or any other rights of any third parties or of any other person.
 
Liability:  Artwork displayed in and around ArtSpace Herndon and at the Herndon Labor Day Festival will be exhibited at the artist’s own risk.  The Artist is responsible for insuring, delivering and picking up his/her artwork.

ArtSpace Herndon, Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts, Town of Herndon, and the Herndon Woman’s Club and/or their employees or volunteers are not liable for theft or damage to artwork in transit, on display, or otherwise included in the events associated with Paint Herndon 2011.

The artist also agrees to not hold ArtSpace Herndon, Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts, Town of Herndon, and the Herndon Woman’s Club and/or their employees or volunteers responsible for injury, property damage, or theft of any kind related to their participation in the events associated with Paint Herndon 2011 or the Labor Day Festival.
 

Pick up of Artwork:  Artists are responsible for picking up any unsold artwork in a timely manner

• at the end of Paint Herndon from 5:30pm -6:30pm on Saturday, September 3, 2011, or
• at the end of the exhibit on:  Sunday, September 26^th, 5-7pm, or Monday, September 27^th, 10am – 2pm.

All artwork left over 30 days will be considered a donation to ArtSpace.
