Present

"Racing Legends-Featuring The Cars Of Carroll Shelby"

Join us on September 17th for a day dedicated to the appreciation of some of the milestone automobiles created by Carroll Shelby. Team Shelby Northeast and the Simeone Museum, will be your hosts for an event that will bring together enthusiasts, a former Shelby employee, original and ‘new generation’ Shelby’s, and some very historical Shelby vehicles, including the first Cobra Daytona Coupe ever produced.

The day will begin at 10:00.  Those Shelby cars that pre-register, will be invited to park in a special reserved area, and will be eligible to participate in a judged car show, that will run throughout the day.  Trophies will be awarded in various categories.  Car’s not pre-registered will be allowed to register the day of the event, as space allows.

At noontime, the ‘center stage’ area comes to life.  Dr. Simeone will lead a discussion on the history of Shelby automobiles featured in the center area, and the Shelby Racing program.  Chuck Cantwell will then take over and host a Question & Answer session, centering on his days working for Shelby American back in the mid 1960’s.  Chuck was the lead engineer in charge of developing the GT350 and the GT500 projects.

On display in the center stage area will be:

  • Cobra Daytona Coupe – This was the first one made (#1 of 6 total cars).  It has also been referred to as the “Lost Cobra”, and was owned and for a time, driven on the streets of Los Angeles by Phil Spector.  This car also held numerous land speed records set at the Salt Flats in Utah.
  • 1968 Team Shelby Trans-Am Mustang - One of the two Mustangs entered in the 1968 Daytona 24-hour race, by Shelby Racing and driven by Jerry Titus and Ronny Bucknum.  It finished first in class and an amazing fourth overall behind three Porsche 907s.
  • 1965 Shelby GT350R – One of the original 36 “R” models produced, this car, serial number 5R103, took the title in 1966 driven by Walt Hane. When the total number of race wins are tabulated, the record shows that this car won more races in its career than any other R-Model.
  • Shelby GT350 - This is Chuck Cantwell’s personal car.
  • Ford GT40 Mk II
  • Ford GT40 Mk IV
  • 427 Cobra Roadster
  • 289 Cobra Roadster

Now for the most exciting part of the day!  At 1:00, the Daytona Coupe and the GT40 Mk II will be moved outside for a demonstration of the cars on the 3 acre lot behind the Museum.  How many people are able to say they had stood within arms length of one of these cars (let along both of them) as they have driven by?  To experience the sights, sounds, and even the smell of these cars is something you will never forget.

Car Show judging will take place at 2:00, with Dr. Simeone and Chuck Cantwell assisting in judging.

A formal guided tour of the entire museum collection will be available in the afternoon for those individuals who pre-register for the event.  This will take you past all the cars on display, and retrace the history of Motor Racing in America.

Feel free to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy under a tree outside the museum.  Food, such as hot dogs, snacks, soda, will also be available for purchase.
