The Paint Herndon 2011 Painting Competition includes a Youth Division for artists ages 8 – 11 and a Teen Division for artists ages 12 – 17, in addition to the adult competition. Each division will have cash prizes. This competition is designed in the spirit of a "day painting" competition, which challenges artists to create works of art in a short period of time.
Painters must register and pay the entry fee to compete for prizes. For more information on the Painting Competition, click here. Look for the dates and times specific to the competition.
Art Exhibits. In addition to the outdoor events, everyone is invited to see the wonderful art on exhibit inside ArtSpace throughout the day. “Peace and Quiet” featuring pastels, oils, and etchings by local artist Lori Simmerman Goll is on display in the Post Gallery. The show includes a variety of subjects and media but will focus primarily on recent pastel landscapes of Frying Pan Park, other nearby farms, and seascapes.
In the Sapphire Gallery is an exhibition of tractor art by Bill Firestone, whose works evoke a time when the Greater Herndon area was a lot quieter and peaceful as a dairy farming center. And, at the end of the day, artwork entered in the Paint Herndon Painting Competition will be on exhibit in the ArtLab.
Grand Finale
At 4:00pm, the festivities move indoors. Ice cream and cake celebrating the 3rd anniversary of the opening of ArtSpace's will be served. And, when the judges complete their work, the winners of the Painting Competition will be announced. You will not want to miss the live country and folk music presented by Jean Goldsby in the gallery.
This year’s Paint Herndon 2011 is produced by ArtSpace Herndon in partnership with Frying Pan Farm Park, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Tawny Hammond, Park Manager at Frying Pan Farm Park, was looking for an arts component to help represent the beauty of the farm and said, “We are delighted to partner with Herndon’s ArtSpace to accomplish our mission, and besides it will be a lot of fun!”
Together, the volunteers from both organizations will be on hand throughout the day to tell the story of when the nearby W & OD trail, now a regional park and bike route, provided the tracks for the milk trains into Washington. It was only a half century ago that the building occupied by ArtSpace was a showroom for International Harvester Tractors like those included in the display on the lawn.
Paint Herndon 2011 events will be held at ArtSpace Herndon, 750 Center Street, Herndon, VA 20170. Open to the public. No admission charge. Registration is required for the painting competition. For more information, see our website www.artspaceherndon.org or call 703-956-6590.
