After the success of last year's Revision  Intensive, our team of volunteers decided to offer a Character Development Intensive with two terrific speakers.

Limited to 50 participants, we have planned a gathering in an intimate setting to help you whip your cast of characters into shape.

NOTE:  BRING YOUR OWN LUNCH.  SCWBI will provide morning coffee/tea and muffins; drinks; and afternoon snacks. Lunch time is an opportunity for you to meet your fellow writers and discuss the business of writing (also a great time to find critique group buddies!)

9:00 - 9:30: Welcome and introductions

9:30 - 12:00: Through the Looking Glass: How Characters Make Us Up
Charlie Price, author
We will discuss the primacy of the brain's visual network and "working memory" phenomenon and practice imaging scenes and characters. Picturing rather than thinking, we will bypass the standard cogitative process, look through our paper or computer screen, and write what we see. We will experiment in a similar way with the senses of smell and hearing to perhaps discover different inroads into character development. We will break into small groups and explore converting the visual aspects of storytelling imagination into brief chaacter and setting sketches.

Coming up with unique characters is hard enough—making them leap off the page is even harder! We’ll talk about getting to know your own characters through questions, and incorporating these ideas into your work.

FACULTY BIOS

Noa Wheeler is an editor at Henry Holt Books for Young Readers. She has worked in various capacities on a wide range of books at Henry Holt, including the award-winning books The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly and Charles and Emma by Deborah Heiligman. Most recently, she has worked on Unison Spark by Andy Marino and the forthcoming novels 37 Things I Love by Kekla Magoon and Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo.

Charlie Price is the 2011 Edgar Mystery Award winner for YA category with Interrogation  of Gabriel James. Charlie has received multiple awards for his five YA novels over the past five years, all written after the age of 60. A master in character development, his new release, Dead Girl Moon, is due out April, 2012. Charlie will be available for book signing after the workshop.
