1st Annual Pasadena Parkinson's Screening and Symposium 

Parkinson’s disease is a debilitating progressive neurodegenerative disorder that robs people of independence. The National Parkinson’s Foundation estimates 60,000 new cases of Parkinson’s disease are diagnosed annually. On average, that means a new case of Parkinson’s is diagnosed every nine minutes. Nearly 1.5 million Americans have Parkinson’s and 15% of these cases are people under age 50.  It is often associated with four specific motor manifestation or cardinal symptoms;

• Resting tremor
• Slowness in movement
• Stiffness or rigidity
• Balance issues 

However, by the time that these motor symptoms occur, researchers estimate that nearly 70% of the key areas of the brain attacked by PD may already have been destroyed.  Other pre-motor early symptoms will be discussed at the event.  These may include:

• Loss of Smell
• Acting Out Dreams (REM Sleep Behavior Disorder)

Early detection of PD is very important.

Symposium presenters will offer public health education about signs and symptoms of PD, current treatment options, and updates on new research in the fight to Cure Parkinson’s disease.  The event will also offer participants an opportunity for a FREE Parkinson’s disease screening appointment. This screening process is a unique opportunity for San Gabriel Valley residents. Unlike other disorders where a simple test can be administered, Parkinson’s requires a sophisticated assessment by trained clinicians who can distinguish Parkinson’s disease from other neurological issues. If you or someone you know is concerned about Parkinson’s, participation in a free clinical screening may be an option. 

 There will also be exhibitor’s on-hand from many aspects of Parkinson’s care including research professionals, and educational resource personnel. Representatives from Elder Law, home health, Wellness on Wheels, ADT home medical safety, speakers, demo’s, exercise, and much more will be available to attendees. The event is sponsored by the Southern California Movement Disorder Society, NeuroSearch, The Pasadena Senior Center, and made possible by grants from Acadia Pharmaceuticals & TEVA Pharmaceuticals.
