York, SC -- SHOES of Hope...our overall mission is to put 7,500 pairs of new shoes on disadvantaged children in York County for 2012! - and we need your help to succeed.
It's all about NEED...
York County Schools have drastically increased from 30% of students receiving federal lunch subsidy to over 53% - yet it is even more disturbing in the city of York with
68% of children receiving free or subsidized meals
South Carolina ranks 2nd in the nation in demand for free (or reduced lunches) and school breakfast/lunch participation rates.
These children cannot afford shoes, socks, or supplies to start the school year. These children do not have a choice in their plight. But as Samaritan's we do. Read more about SHOES of Hope 2012.

Below are VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:
Set up Team- Meet truck at each venue and help unload. Set up wash stations, shoe store, registration, check out stations (likely the night before the event, August 5, 2011)
Welcome Team-This team consists of Greeters and people sizing guests for the proper shoe size. A warm welcome is key to the beginning of the Shoes of Hope experience. Hugs are welcomed and appreciated. Bi-lingual (Spanish speaking) volunteers will be helpful in this role.
Usher Team- This team will introduce and seat guests with a foot washer (as the stations are available). Always ask the guest their name and personally introduce them when seating them in the foot washing station. Also be sure to guide guests who have received their shoes to the designated exit. When returning please place them on the floor beside the foot washer and take the used shoes and put them in the provided bag for easy carrying home. Please untie and open up new shoes before placing them on the floor for the foot washer. If returning a pair to the shoe store for replacement, please be sure to tie the laces back together.
Foot washer-This team washes guest’s feet and prays with each guest before they leave. People who volunteer in this role should be comfortable with giving plenty of hugs and prayer:
This team checks each guest hand for size of shoe needed and go to the shoe store to get the shoes and socks. Shoe Store Team- This team will find the shoes requested by the shoe specialist and keep a tidy store by replacing returned shoes to their proper place by size. Near the end of distribution (12:00 noon) keep a list of sizes that we no longer have and share that list frequently with the welcome team and distribution leaders.
Water Team- This team will keep fresh water at each foot washing station during the distribution. Water will be replaced after each guest whose feet have been washed. If abrasions were seen on a guest feet during washing that wash basin will be cleaned with bleach before being used again.
Check Out Team- Remove wrist bands and escort our guest out the designated doors.
End of the day Clean up- Everyone on the team should clean up their area and then help with any other area. Each wash basin needs to be bleached and completely dried before being stack inside one another for packing:
- Left over shoes repacked in boxes and taped shut
- Load truck
- Replace all tables and chairs to appropriate storage area
- Empty garbage
- Remove signage, banners, repack supply boxes, t-shirts
- Make sure venue is back to the condition it was in before the event
