On February 2 & 3, 2012, the issue of market housing affordability will be addressed in person, not just in headlines. Bringing together the residential construction industry and members of government, the Housing Affordability Symposium will provide the forum to openly discuss barriers and solutions to improve market housing affordability in BC. More than an educational conference, this symposium provides interactive roundtable discussions amongst all delegates to address various issues related to community planning, maximizing housing stock, economic issues, and regulatory constraints.

 In addition to the roundtable planning discussions, the Symposium will feature a numerous keynote speakers and workshops including:

  • OPENING ADDRESS by Honourable Rich Coleman, Minister of Energy and Mines and Minister Responsible for Housing
  • Richard Stewart (Mayor, City of Coquitlam) & Bob Ransford (Counterpoint Communications) on DEBUNKING THE MYTHS – BEYOND BUILDING GREEN FOR AFFORDABILITY
  • Michel Labbe, Options for Homes, Toronto on BUILDING AFFORDABLE VIA SHARED EQUITY
  • Michael Geller (President, Geller Group) & Tsur Somerville (Director, UBC Centre for Urban Economics and Real Estate) discuss THE BIG PICTURE FOR AFFORDABILITY
  • RETHINKING SIZE – SMALL MEANS AFFORDABILITY - a panel discussion by Dale Mikkelsen (Director of Development, SFU Community Trust), Deana Grinnell (Director, Land Development, Parklane Homes) and Matthew Baldwin (Director of Planning, Langford)
  • INNOVATION AND DIVERSITY IN SOLUTIONS: BUILDING AFFORDABLE FROM RESORTS TO CITIES  - A panel discussion by Marla Zucht (General Manager, Whistler Housing Authority), Daryl Sexsmith (Housing Analyst, City of Saskatoon) and Tara Cooney (Attainable Homes Calgary Corporation)  
  • ROUNDTABLE SOLUTIONS SERIES  - participate in solutions oriented discussions moderated by many of the presenters
  •  

The Symposium begins Thursday February 2, 2012 at 1pm with Balancing Needs workshops and ending at 5pm. A networking reception follows and continues until 7pm. On Friday February 3, 2012, the Symposium continues at 8am until 5pm with several keynote speakers through the morning with the afternoon comprising of roundtable discussions to review and further develop the Action Plan to Address Market Housing Affordability. Your registration fee includes all workshops and sessions, cocktail reception, breakfast and lunch on Day 2, and hotel parking.
