Join the USGBC Redwood Empire Chapter on Thursday, November 10, for two  important educational workshops "CALGreen Non-Residential Code Review" and "Integrated Design for CALGreen Non-Residential Code Compliance".

Two sessions will help you gain a stronger position in your industry by increasing your understanding of what's neccessary to comply with the base mandatory CALGreen Code that went into effect in January.

CALGreen is the next generation update to TItle 24 and sets a new framework for recognizing and codifying an important set of risks to public health and safety not previously considered or addressed in the State's code of regulations. The code slashes water use, mandates the recycling of construction waste, and cuts back on polluting materials in new homes, schools and commercial buildings statewide.

With the Code applying to all occupancies, your clients and consumers will be the beneficiaries of smarter, healthier, more sustainable buildings, including reduced operating costs for building occupants, improved indoor air quality, reduced strain on restricted water and energy supplies, and an overall improved quality of life for Californians.

Read a April 2011 USGBC press release with Dave Walls, Executive Director of California's Building Standards Commission who was asked about his thoughts by Jeremy Sigmon, Manager of Building Codes Advocacy at the US Green Building Council's headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The CALGreen code was a culmination of a three-year development process by California Building Standards Commission (CBSC), Housing and Community Development (HCD), the Division of State Architect, and the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development. It was important to be open and transparent in the process, which included bringing together a wide variety of stakeholders to help with the direction and content of the code. The diversity of opinions and interest made for an interesting ride, and while the code may not be perfect, adding CALGreen to Title 24 is a major step forward toward meeting California's ongoing environmental policies.
