Teaching Skills for Today's Inclusive Classroom:  How to Help Students with Developmental Disabilities Succeed

Thursday, March 22nd at 4:00pm ET

Driven by economics, parental pressure, greater availability of services, and  least restrictive environment regulations, more students with developmental disabilities are in our classrooms these days.

Most general education and FCS teachers, however, never received the specific training needed to meet the learning needs of this population.

The good news is that you don’t need to get a special ed degree to manage the inclusive classroom….but you can learn how to adapt your lessons and activities, employ new assistive technologies, and gain a deeper understanding of the most prevalent developmental disabilities today.

Then you can watch with pride as your students tune-in and demonstrate their learning as you practice your new techniques!

These teacher skills are in high demand now.  By adding this skill set to your resume, you will expand your career options.

Autism diagnosis is on the rise. About 10% of school age children are diagnosed with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.  Sensory processing disorders are increasingly being recognized . And due to changes in diagnostic criteria, greater public awareness, and advances in research, identification of developmental and  learning disabilities is happening at an earlier age. All of this leads to more students with special needs integrated into  classrooms with their typical peers.

You can see why training on this topic is in high demand as more students and adults move into regular schools and community settings where increased and improved services are now available.

Additionally, studies indicate that nutrition plays a significant role in academic success.  This webinar will explain how  limitations in functioning in those with disabilities can lead to nutritional concerns and health issues. Tasting strategies that can increase students’ acceptance of nutritious foods will be suggested.

Another area teachers must keep up-to-date on is the assistive technology that is available for these students.  With the right tools, any worksheet or exam can be converted into pictures for visual learners, touch talkers can support students with speech issues, and learning games, safety rules and schedules can be created using visual tools.

This webinar will be loaded with practical techniques to get you started immediately, or to prepare you for a time when you might find yourself in a teaching position that requires these specialized skills and knowledge. Plus it will give you resources for further exploration.

In this 90-minute program including Q&A, you will:

  • Broaden and deepen your knowledge of developmental disabilities
  • Improve your ability to identify learning needs of those with disabilities
  • Learn how developmental disabilities impact nutrition, learning styles and behavior
  • Learn how to use proven and effective teaching and tasting strategies
  • Explore the value of visual supports for those with developmental disabilities
  • Discover ways to use Boardmaker and other specific technology, and how to make cooking lessons fun and safe

After this webinar, you will feel confident in your ability to adapt your teaching strategies, anticipate and manage behavioral challenges, set up your classroom and environment for student success, and be creative and flexible with the students who are relying on you for academic success.
You can be instrumental in setting kids up for a lifetime.

Who should register?   FCS teachers, Extension educators, school nurses, health teachers, dieticians, and others who work with students with developmental disabilities of all types. It also will be beneficial for teachers who want to be prepared in advance and for teachers in training.

Not able to attend on March 22? No problem. This event will be archived on the AAFCS website for the same low registration rates.  Click here to register for the archived recording.
