The California Genealogical Society (CGS) and the Oakland California Family History Center (OCFHC) present Ancestral Homelands: A Spotlight Series for Beginners. This new monthly series will help you find where your immigrant ancestor came from and the kinds of resources available for that part of the world. Each month* will focus on different country or region.
February's Spotlight :
Beginning Research in England - Jeremy Frankel
Introduction to England genealogical research with online resources and materials at the Oakland California Family History Center.
These records also include those people with roots in Wales. Scotland
and Northern Ireland have their own databases but these won't be
covered in this tutorial.
The class will learn about resources for English/Welsh vital records
through the twentieth century, census records for 1841-1911, church
and probate records.
We will also briefly look at directories, other government records,
The National Archives (formerly the Public Record Office), and
discuss the issues surrounding immigration and naturalization.
For those attending who already have a familiarity with U.S. records,
this exposure to English/Welsh records will go some way towards
understanding the limitations and challenges to researching
information on their forebears.
Attendees will arrive already prepared with information on their
families. I will begin by asking what their level of familiarity is
with researching genealogical materials.
Finally, depending upon any remaining time we'll look at some of the
materials to research for ancestors on the FHC computers.
