The Episcopal Diocese of Montana is committed to providing safe congregations and ministries for children and youth.  As part of this commitment all adults who work with children or youth, either regularly or occasionally are required to complete training as outlined in our Safeguarding God's Children policies.  This class can be taken at training events in congregations or diocesan settings, or on-line.

To attend an on-line class you will need to register from this link and provide the information you are promped for.  After the diocese receives your information an e-mail with your personal username and password, which gives you access to the online training, will be sent to you within five business days of your submission (after the class info is ready on-line for our diocese).

This training is not restricted to staff/volunteers who regularly or occasionally work with children or youth.  Education is encouraged for all members of our congregations.  We do ask if you register, to provide us with information regarding which congregation you are from so we can share with your congregation the classes you have successfully completed.

This on-line training is available, much thanks, to the efforts of the Church Pension Group and affiliate companies.

What classes must I pass to qualify for training in the Episcopal Diocese of Montana?

When you go online you will notice some differences between the Safeguarding God's Children classes and the learning units you will see on the web site.  To best understand it may be important to know or understand the Safeguarding class as it is taught currently in our diocese.

In short the class has two audiences which are addressed in two different sections.

The first audience is parents and congregations.  Its content is intended for broad distribution.  It may be good for a whole congregation - regardless of involvement with child/youth programs.  To complete this section in a traditional class a person only need watch the "Safeguarding God's Children, for Parents and Congregations, with a facilitator provided by the diocese or your congregation who is approved to share the video.

The second audience is geared at any person who regularly or occasionally works with children or youth and or leaders in a congregation or ministry setting.  This portion of the class must include the viewing of "Safeguarding God's Children for Ministries" and reading and understanding the approved Safeguarding God's Children poleis of the Episcopal Diocese of Montana.  Once you have done this you will have satisfied the second requirement for training.

When you take the "on-line" class you will see different names for the classes.  Further, they are broken down a little differently than the packages we use in safeguarding class.

To meet the requirement for Safeguarding God's Children for Parents and Congregations you must successfully complete two units:  Meet Sam and It Happened to Me.

To meet the requirement for "Safeguarding God's Children for Ministries" you must successfully complete: "Keeping Your Church Safe “and completing the section "Your Policies".

Do I have to take the classes all at one time?  No, your username and password will make it possible for you to log into the training site at different times, making it possible to complete a section, then return at a different time to complete one or more additoinal sections.

What about the other classes?  There are other classes/trainings available which you will be able to take.  If you are volunteer, and or are working at Camp Marshall.  We highly recommend taking the section "Keeping Your Camp Safe" and likewise, if you are volunteering or staffing a day camp you take the unit on "A day at Day Camp".

How long the class is good for:  In the Episcopal diocese of Montanan we require that this training be done every three years.  For any active youth ministries that change from year to year with staff and program we recommend re-visiting the training on an annual basis.  Also, each time you train, we recommend you visit with others in your area of ministry to look over the policies, while looking specifically at the program you are providing.  This can create a healthy relationship among staff and foster a safe program environment.
