FEATURED PRESENTATIONS

Navigating Practice Transitions
moderated by Ms. Ricki Braswell, CAE

Understanding how to navigate the important practice transitions within your life can be crucial to reaching your goals while maintaining your work/life balance. In this special bonus session, Dr. Kevin Kwiecien, Assistant Professor-Restorative Dentistry at OHSU, will speak to three dentists about their practice triumphs and challenges as they work toward creating their practice vision.

Panelists:
Charlie WardDr. Charlie Ward
I attended the University of Maryland Dental School and graduated in 2008. I work in a group practice with three other dentists. We have two offices and both focus on general restorative dentistry and orthodontics. In 24 months I hope to be a partner in the practice, working four days a week and treating restorative and orthodontic patients. I would also like for my wife to be working with us part-time, seeing our perio patients.

Jen DavisDr. Jennifer Davis
I started my career in dentistry as a dental hygienist. I worked for ten years in hygiene while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. After completion of dental school at the University of Pennsylvania I began private practice with Dr. Frederick S. Johnson, DMD. My start as a hygienist provided me with the opportunity to witness first hand a multitude of dental practice styles. My ten year career as a dentist has already provided to me a multitude of challenges and success as I strive to produce the practice of my vision. Currently, I am the owner of Dental Art Images, LLC. I am in the process of developing a study group entitled Application of the Principles of the Pankey Institute. Our first meeting is scheduled to begin September 20th. I would like to be able to help create an atmosphere of learning and growth for other dentists, just as I have been fortunate to have been influenced by so many other dentists of Pankey origin. I will be continuing in my private practice to practice comprehensive dentistry. My skills are developing as a dentist, leader, and teacher.

Devon ConklinDr. Devon Conklin
My parents are both general dentists who have had a practice together for 30 years. I have been in practice with them for two years now. Right now I am working in private practice with my parents and Charlie Ward as a general dentist. We have two locations where I split my time equally. I enjoy restorative dentistry and surgery. In 24 months we will have hopefully settled into our new building and Charlie and I will be owners of the practice. All four of us will continue to work together in both locations.

Upon completion of this event, participants will be able to participate in the social media revolution immediately and see their practices grow.

GarberThe Critical "Pink" Interface in Aesthetic Dentistry... Options... Limitations... Solutions
presented by Dr. David Garber

This program is a perspective into how multidisciplinary “interface planning” has become an integral part of clinical aesthetic dentistry, in particular implant diagnostics, and why in 2012 it has become essential to combine not only “white” tooth aesthetics but also “pink” gingival aspects.

Today, understanding the prosthetic, surgical, and biological limitations, is part of new treatment planning protocols in an approach to simplify, and provide minimally invasive therapy.

Preemptive virtual 3D CAD/CAM planning of soft and hard tissue procedures and laboratory restorative design, as well as CAD/CAM milled prosthetics, now utilize new innovative protocols for the entire procedure, start to finish.

Learning Objectives:

  • Ceramic Restorative Decisions 2012: Zirconium, lithium disilicate full contour zirconium, Titanium, Ceramo-metal “Artificial gingivae” - ceramic vs. composite vs. “hybrid innovations.”
  • A new look at the critical abutment/implant interface in aesthetic restorations.
  • Virtual treatment planning 2011 - prognostic 3-dimensional planning of all aspects of the complete restorative procedure - design, surgery, and abutment and crowns.
  • New protocols for the single rapid dento-gingival, provisional restorations.
  • Evolving designs in abutments - scalloped, conical, and Laser-lok.
  • The adjacent implant dilemma.

SmallThe Culture is the Brand
presented by Dr. Joel C. Small

Leadership development is a twelve billion dollar a year industry. It has become the single largest training expenditure of corporate America. What is it that business leaders understand about leadership that dentistry is just now beginning to recognize? Why is leadership and the culture it creates our practice’s only real source of sustainable competitive advantage? More importantly, why is value-based leadership the driving force that creates the financial and personal rewards that distinguish a “great” dental practice from a “good” practice? These questions and more will be answered as we delve into the contemporary world of value-based leadership as it applies to our practices.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand why traditional leadership principles used in large organizations do not work for us.
  • Identify the ways in which we unknowingly restrict our practices growth and development.
  • Create a game plan to increase staff retention, improve doctor and staff fulfillment, and  experience true personal growth while increasing our practices bottom line.
  • Understand how we can create our practice's "True North".
