Courage in Leadership:
Difficult Conversations and Teacher Evaluations

How does a principal discuss an evaluation with a teacher whose instruction is minimally effective? Or the teacher whose instruction is effective but not yet highly effective? ...And do so in a way that improves performance?

This session is designed to help principals prepare for those conversations.

Effective school leaders demonstrate courage and integrity in their practice through their skillful handling of difficult conversations.  With the current focus on teacher evaluation, building the capacity for effectively addressing performance issues with teachers is critically important.  These two sessions are sequential, with information at the first session serving as a foundation for the second session.  Participants at these two sessions will:

  • Examine the "will level" and "skill level" of teachers, and become aware of the different types of leadership conversations needed for specific types of teachers
  • Be introduced to and practice a specific model for offering effective feedback
  • Learn a method for planning and conducting a difficult conversation, and build their personal capacity for holding these conversations
