Maintaining Your Florida Yard Workshop

Saturday, March 24, 2012      9 am to 2 pm

 Weedon Island Preserve Education Center

Whether you've already begun a Florida-Friendly yard makeover, or are still contemplating one, this workshop will give you practical knowledge about Florida-Friendly landscape principles that you can put to use immediately in your own yard.

Think you have a Black Thumb when it comes to gardening? Maybe you just need a little advice and inspiration from some experts to turn that thumb a lovely shade of green.  We can help!

Maintaining Your Florida Yard  will feature four one-hour sessions that tackle common landscape challenges we all face:

  • St. Petersburg landscape using native plantsYou'll learn how to select healthy plants from a nursery, plant them at the proper depth, and group them according to their watering, light and soil needs. You'll also learn how to mulch correctly, how to us and what types of mulch to use, as well as the basics of Integrated Pest Management.
  • Are you a menace to your plants with pruning shears? Never fear. We'll teach you how to select and care for pruning tools and how to prune all kinds of plants, from groudcovers to palms, the right way.
  • Never heard of micro-irrigation? Our session will tell you why it's the perfect way for True Floridians to water their landscapes, and give you hands-on practice in installing the components. You'll be surprised how easy it is!
  • Frustrated with trying to maintain a healthy green lawn? We will teach you how to mow, fertilize and water your lawn the Florida-Friendly way. That does NOT mean pouring an entire bag of fertilizer on your lawn and then scalping it down to the ground!

Cost for the workshop is $10 and includes lunch, all materials, tools such as rain gauges and plant guides, free Florida-friendly plants, and terrific door prizes. Space is limited to 50 people. Participants will be divided into two groups to allow for more interaction and hands-on time in each session.
