Florida's K-14 Education System
APICS Tampa Bay (The Association for Operations Management) invites Tampa Bay area operations management and supply chain professionals to our February Professional Development Meeting on February 7, 2012 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm at Bascoms Chop House, 3665 Ulmerton Road, Clearwater FL 33762. Our speaker is Dr. Marilyn Barger, Principal Investigator and Executive Director of FLATE, the Florida Regional Center of Advanced Technological Education. She will be speaking on the topic of "Manufacturing, Logistics and Transportation in Florida's K-14 Education System".
The Florida Advanced Technological Education (FLATE) is Florida's National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education (NSF ATE) Center of Excellence serving the state of Florida and is housed in the Tampa Bay area at Hillsborough Community College's Brandon Campus with the college's Engineering Technology A.S. Degree. The NSF ATE program is focused on improving the quality and quantity of 2 year technicians that support a wide range of advanced and emerging technologies and their application sectors. FLATE is one of 42 networked Centers working together across the country to advance technician education and partnering with industry for a new American workforce. FLATE's technology focus is advanced manufacturing.
This presentation will discuss the current status of manufacturing, logistics, transportation education in Florida's K-14 education systems. Dr. Barger will also present an overview of the FLATE Center's activities since it was first funded in 2004, focusing on three areas of outreach, professional development and curriculum reform for 2 year degree programs in Florida. Please join us for dinner, networking and professional development with Tampa Bay operations management and supply chain professionals.
Speaker: Dr. Marilyn Barger
Dr. Marilyn Barger is the Principal Investigator and Executive Director of FLATE, the Florida Regional Center of Advanced Technological Education at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Florida. FLATE is involved in outreach and recruitment of students into technical career pathways; curriculum development and reform for secondary and post-secondary Career and Technical Education programs; and professional development for technical teachers and faculty focused on advanced technologies.
Dr. Barger earned a B.A. in Chemistry at Agnes Scott College and both a B.S. in Engineering Science and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (Environmental) from the University of South Florida. She has over 20 years of experience in developing curricula for engineering and engineering technology for elementary, middle, high school, and post secondary institutions, including colleges of engineering.
Dr. Barger serves on several national panels and advisory boards for technical programs, curriculum and workforce initiatives, including the National Association of Manufacturers Educator’s Council. She is a registered professional engineer in the State of Florida, a Fellow of the American Society of Engineering Education, and charter member of both the National Academy and the University of South Florida‘s Academy of Inventors.

This dinner meeting includes your choice of soda, iced tea and coffee, dinner rolls and a mixed green salad. Entree choices are Grouper A La Maniere, Chopped Steak, and Chicken Dijon with Garlic Mashed Potatoes and Vegetable Medley. Dessert is a choice of Cheese Cake or Belgian Triple Chocolate Torte.
