Pathways to Economic Opportunity: The Puerto Rican and Other Latinos Experience
Puerto Ricans living in the United States experience higher rates of unemployment and poverty than other Latino subgroups. Professor Edwin Meléndez will discuss a comprehensive study that examines low-wage labor markets in the United States and pathways to economic opportunity for Puerto Ricans and other Latinos. He will discuss the influence of such factors as education, English fluency, social and ethnic networks, and community organizations that shape local labor dynamics and outcomes.
Edwin Meléndez is a Professor of Urban Affairs and Planning at Hunter College and the Director of the Center for Puerto Rican Studies. He has conducted considerable research in the areas of Latino studies, economic development, labor markets, and poverty.
