2012 SPE Eastern Regional Meeting

Energy's Call to the Post!

Conference Preview

racing

One of the events of this years conference will be a tour of one of Kentucky's Horse Farms.

WELCOME from the Land of Thoroughbreds, Bluegrass and Bourbon:

On behalf of the East Kentucky Section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), it is our honor and privilege to host the Eastern Regional Meeting for 2012 at the Clarion Hotel in Lexington, Kentucky from Wednesday, October 3rd thru Friday, October 5th. Your committee has labored long this past year to prepare for an outstanding technical, educational, and social event.

The theme of this year’s meeting is ENERGY'S CALL TO THE POST. This underlies the fact that the time to act is now, while also highlighting our backdrop and host city, Lexington, the "Horse Capital of the World." We expect to have outstanding exhibitors, who are prepared to showcase the latest in technological advances.

Our technical program consists of three distinct segments this year, beginning with the workshops on Wednesday afternoon: (1) A geological overview of the Utica Shale from the former State Geologist of Ohio, Larry Wickstrom; (2) An update on fluids measurement by Mike Hackl; and finally, (3) a two-hour Enhanced Oil Recovery workshop provided by Dwight Rychel of the PTTC. The technical committee has also put together a total of 24 technical papers to be presented in two concurrent tracks during the day on Thursday, October 4. The sessions are further divided into four topical areas: Completions/Stimulations; Reservoir Engineering I; Horizontal Drilling; and Reservoir Engineering II. Many of these papers deal directly with the drilling and production of shale formations.

Also on Thursday, our awards luncheon will feature the keynote speaker and well known author, Robert Bryce. A regular guest on Fox News and CNBC, Mr. Bryce has written several books on energy, including "Gusher of Lies: The Dangerous Delusions of Energy Independence" and "Power Hungry: The Myths of Green Energy, and the Real Fuels of the Future." Don’t miss this incredible and dynamic presentation.

Friday morning will consist of a very interesting and thought provoking roundtable discussion on "The Future of Natural Gas." The blue ribbon panel specially selected for this event includes: Dave Schlosser of EQT; Steve Hendrick of Bayer Chemical; Scott Rotruck of Chesapeake; Al Yost of the Department of Energy; and Tim Light of AEP.

For your enjoyment we have included a slate of social events: Wednesday morning will be our traditional golf scramble just next door at the beautiful Griffin Gate golf course; well within walking distance to the Clarion Hotel. Wednesday evening will feature a welcome reception in the exhibit area with good food and networking opportunities as well as uninterrupted time with the exhibitors. On Thursday, the spouses event will be extra special and will showcase the great state of Kentucky. Then later that evening, we will all enjoy the "Around the World" food stations, followed by a "Night at the Races."

We sincerely hope that you find this year’s SPE Eastern Regional Meeting to be enjoyable, educational, memorable, and just plain fun, as you take in the best that Kentucky has to offer.

Sincerely,

Derek S. Hina, General Co-Chariman

Harry D. Callicotte, General Co-Chairman
