Intrapreneurship, Organisational Change & Innovation Day

Friday 20th April, House for an Art Lover, Glasgow

Intrapreneurship: the art of being enterprising within an organisation

Intrapreneurship has been described as entrepreneurship's forgotten little brother or sister. Usually defined as the art of being enterprising within an organisation, it is as challenging as entrepreneurship.

The intrapreneur, unless they have full support of their employer, faces just as many challenges as the entrepreneur. But they are different challenges.

For the second of our RSA Scotland and EDAS "Can A Nation Create Entrepreneurs?", we are going to examine just how easy, or difficult it is for innovation to flourish within an organisation.

We are always being told of the need for public, private and third sectors to be more enterprising. What does this actually mean? How easy is it to do something different? What gets in the way? Who gets in the way? Can it be done and if so, how?

Do you work in an organisation where the default position is "yes" but somehow nothing ever happens?

This is a chance to find out what really happens to enterprising people and innovative approaches which try to take root in organisations and companies.

The format for this second session is the same as the first successful, and sold out event. Once again we will hear from expert witnesses followed by discussion.  However, such was the demand, this time, we will expand the discussion time and there will be greater opportunity to explore and discuss the issues and opportunities arising.

How a Nation Learns to be Enterprising is an enterprise journey started by Iain Scott as a Fellow-led RSA project, in partnership with Economic Development Association of Scotland. Downloads from Part I can be found on the EDAS website.

10:20 Entrepreneur Vs Janiteur

Iain Scott FRSA is a specialist in how people and organisations learn to be enterprising. His particular area of expertise is Intrapreneurship. 11:45  The Enterprising Manager – Introducing & Implementing Innovation/Intrapreneurship

Fiona Campbell has headed up the benefits and housing team at two Scottish Councils and had a spell at the Department of Work and Pensions. She will outline just what it is really like to create innovative activity in the public sector with particular reference to the practical implications. Fiona was at the forefront of pioneering new approaches in the massively complex area of housing and benefits. Sometimes she won, sometimes...

12:45  Lunch and informal discussion.

13.45  The Private Sector View

Alan Meldrum is VP and General Manager of Percepta Europe and Asia Pacific. Percepta is a joint venture with Ford Motor Company and TeleTech and was specifically created in 2000 to provide innovative customer experience and customer loyalty for the automotive industry. Percepta, one of the UK's most innovative companies; profitable, international and all achieved within an iconic but hugely bureaucratic organisation. Alan will outline how he has created an intrapreneurial culture in a company with global priorities.

14:15  Discussion

14:45  Workshops: What blocks intrapreneurship and innovation? (coffee available)

15:30  The Intrapreneurship Challenge

Given this day brings together theory and practice, Iain Scott will now set a challenge for you to take away, consider and apply.

How would you stimulate intrapreneurship in your organisation? What would you remove? Who would you remove? Where will you be in five years' time? Still in the same place or left to fulfil your potential elsewhere?  After all, the day is about intrapreneurship, so what happens next is entirely up to you!  All we want to know is, what will you do next.

16:00  A well-earned refreshment
