What You'll Learn
This webinar is intended for those who have little to no experience working with individuals who are Deaf-Blind. By attending this webinar the participants will gain the basic knowledge and confidence that is necessary for communication and also working as a Service Support Provider (SSP). Upon completion of this workshop participants will:
- Become aware of the history of DeafBlindness
- Become aware of the modes of communication used by individuals who are Deaf-Blind
- Become aware of the roles and responsibilities of an SSP
- Become aware of the types of technology used by individuals who are Deaf-Blind
About the PresenterS
Akeya Peoples is a Louisiana native who began in 1997 taking community sign language classes. Her passion and interest grew tremendously. She first attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA and later transferred to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. From there she obtained both her Associates (2008) and Bachelor’s (2010) degrees in Interpretation: ASL/English. Since that time she maintained a close relationship with the Deaf community. She has also been involved with the Deaf-Blind community since 2007. She has served on the board of the Arkansas Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (ARID) for 3 ½ years until she relocated to Shreveport, Louisiana. She currently works as a full-time staff interpreter at the Betty and Leonard Phillips Deaf Action Center in Shreveport. Akeya is also currently working on attaining national certification as an interpreter as well as learning Spanish so that she can be a trilingual interpreter.
