About the Conference

Media consolidation has led to a loss of local voices.  Partisan infotainment has replaced ‘news we can use’.  Commercial programming flows one-way to consumers instead of information being shared among citizens.  A vibrant community based media system is needed now more than ever!

Community radio, local blogs and on-line news sources, PEG access television, and indie media create Local Connections:  It’s All Community Media!

But, how do we create and sustain a space for citizen use of communication resources, a local media commons where creativity is nurtured, independence is valued, diversity is cultivated, and all voices are welcome?   Join us  for two days of learning and sharing to build stronger connections with fellow community based media organizations in the Northwest.   Whether you’re into community radio, write a blog, run an access television center or work in indie media, this conference welcomes your participation in the conversation.

8:00 AM  - REGISTRATION OPEN

9:00 AM  - Welcome

9:15 - A Local Media Commons: Creating a Place for All
Community based radio, television, on-line publishers and independent media producers have a lot in common.  Our missions are similar.  The challenges facing us are not unique.  What ties us together is our ability to empower our communities.  Representatives from community radio, PEG access, indie media, broad band and the regulatory arena will discuss the future of our respective services, identify challenges on the horizon, and share insights on how we might work together to support our missions.  The morning is designed to be highly participatory, inviting attendees to share stories, explore new ways to connect our community and serve our constituents, and challenge the status quo in order to protect the public interest in the information age.

Confirmed speakers:  Tony Perez, NATOA; Mary Beth Henry, City of Portland; Michael Huntsberger, Linfield College; Alan Bushong, CCTV Salem, OR.

11:45 -  Networking Lunch:  Small group discussion continues during lunch - visit our sponsor displays.

1:00 -  Sustaining Our Work – After lunch, nonprofit consultant, Susan Howlett, shares her considerable expertise with us in a fun, information packed afternoon.  Are you worried about having the funding to do the robust programming your community deserves?  Do you see government, foundation and corporate funding shifting all around you?  Learn how to create a diversified, sustainable funding plan that will support your important work for years to come.  You’ll get not only clear strategies, based on recent research, but also practical new tactics that fit into your busy schedule and your comfort zone.  Leave refreshed and hopeful about fundraising, which will be likened to good sex!

5:00 – Mix and mingle with conference attendees
