Emerging Leaders United Literacy Kit Volunteer Project

Get crafty with Emerging Leaders United! Join us for happy hour at Ropewalk on April 25 and assemble literacy kits for local children.

Reading is the foundation for learning, yet too many children enter school without the basic skills they need to learn to read. Research has shown that children learn best when they are engaged and having fun. “Literacy kits” help make reading fun for both the child and for the adult who is reading with the child.

A literacy kit includes a book and a collection of related objects, games or other activities designed to make reading interactive and enjoyable for young children. Contents of the literacy kit can help bring books to life and deepen the reading experience for the child. Literacy kits can give teachers, child care workers and volunteer readers ready-to-use tools to support the development of a child’s language and literacy skills, as well as their creative thinking.
