WE ARE VERY PROUD TO ANNOUNCE... the first annual Third Coast Fiber Arts Festival ... two wonderful days of fiber fun, education and, of course, a thriving marketplace. Metro Detroit deserves a close-in, first-rate fiber arts celebration. So we set out to right this wrong!

The time is right (September 21 & 22, 2012). The location is right – in the midst of a vibrant fiber arts community and on the campus of Wayne State University in midtown Detroit, an area that’s been booming, revitalizing, and attracting hundreds of new residents in the past few years.  We hope you’ll come look!

The Third Coast Fiber Arts Festival has been created for folk we like to call fiber fanatics -- many of whom travel hundreds of miles to attend the closest major fiber events, in Michigan and throughout the nation.

Sally MelvilleWe have secured some of America’s (and Michigan’s) finest fiber arts instructors including Sally Melville – see the workshop list below – as well as an impressive array of marketplace vendors eager to show off their wares. They include hand-dyers, spinners, tool makers, silversmiths, and other artisans. This will be an amazing display of the kind of talent usually found only at festivals located in other communities.  We also plan to celebrate all of the shops in Metro Detroit that offer yarns, classes, and other invaluable materials each and every day – we’ll have lists of them for you to take home, and we’ll have volunteers from a good many of them.

During the festival, we also will have ongoing demonstrations of spinning, weaving, bobbin lace making, and other crafts.  Our weaving demonstrator will be making a beautiful shawl to be raffled off at the Saturday night gala reception.

And we will have other attractions as well (Learn the Knit Stitch, for instance, and Learn Single Crochet) designed to help local charities, including First Step Center for domestic and sexual violence.

mcg interior 2Another thing that makes this event special is its venue -- the McGregor Center on the campus of Wayne State University. The center, designed by famed architect Yamasaki, is a spacious marble and glass castle. Abundant natural light means the marketplace will literally showcase your work. And the center's capable staff is there to help you.

greektown smallTo attract high-quality fiber arts folk, we're working hard to make the Third Coast Fiber Arts Festival a very, very special event.  The Wayne Stat University campus is bustling with students, galleries, and places to gather.  It has a fitness center.  It’s also walking distance from world-renowned museums and incredible dining from plain to extra fancy. Greektown and Windsor, Ontario are just minutes away. Both offer casinos, yummy food and great walking around.  Both sides of the Detroit River now boast world-class river walkways.

FOR PROSPECTIVE VENDORS:

Space is limited.  If you decide to apply, do it soon.  Once we’re full, we’re full – and it won’t be because we don’t want you.  The Conference Center’s vendor rooms are beautiful but limited in physical size.  And we don’t have outdoor spaces except for demonstrations, weather permitting.

You won’t be disappointed.  The festival's primary market area -- metropolitan Detroit, southeastern Michigan, northern Ohio and just-across-the-river Ontario -- is simply packed with people who live, breathe and adore fiber. These folks are knitters, herders, crocheters, spinners and weavers. They appreciate the good stuff -- the yarn, roving and other fiber-related products you create.
