Bike tour is on…but with changes…

Due to the deteriorating forecast with Sandy moving up the coast, we are making the following changes on the tour schedule:

  • Start times will be advanced by one hour to allow an earlier finish – hopefully to avoid bad weather.  (See starts time below.)
  • All services, including lunch, will be closed at 2pm to allow tents and services to be safely stowed away.  We will have a shortened option for 100 milers to allow those riders to finish earlier
  • Our sold out oyster roast is in a covered building and will still be held Saturday evening

We want to encourage everyone to keep abreast of the storm forecast and stay safe.  Please be aware that there are restrictions on travel on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel in high winds so be sure to plan your departures from the Shore accordingly.

 Hope to see everyone tomorrow.

For Your Safety, HELMETS are REQUIRED

ROUTES & STARTING TIMES

100-mile English Century - 7:15 a.m.

60-mile Metric Century - 8:00 a.m.

40-mile - 9:00 a.m.

25-mile - 10:00 a.m.

REST STOP DISTANCES

20 Mile Route - 3 stops 7 to 8 miles apart.  You will drive your car to the lunch site.

40 Mile Route - 4 stops 7 to 10 miles apart with lunch at approximately 25 miles

60 Mile Route - 6 stops 7 to 17 miles apart with lunch at approximately 35 miles

100 Mile Route - 6 stops 7 to 22 miles apart with lunch at approximately 48 miles.

The Between the Waters Bike Tour promises water views on both sides of the Delmarva peninsula through the gracious hospitality of private homeowners who allow us to use their properties for the rest stops along the route.  Each rest stop will have liquids, light snacks and a toilet.  Stops will be open on a published schedule found on your cue sheet.  If you reach a stop before or after its scheduled operating time, service may not be available.  Lunch will be available on each route.

The topography on the Shore is very flat--NO hills--with the highest point at only 42 feet.  All public roads are paved but a good bit of the mileage is asphault and the remaining mileage (60+%) is tar and chip.  The asphault rolls very smoothly, but the tar and chips rolls a bit more roughly.  The roads are very rural with little traffic as we do not usually ride on US Rte. 13.

SAG

Professional service from Salisbury Cycle & Fitness will be available at the start/finish area and at the lunch stop.  Several marked vehicles will be riding the routes and available all day to assist riders.  Most rest stops can contact them.

  • Police and Rescue Squads are aware of the Tour and its routes.
  • If you have a medical or police emergency, call 911 as soon as you can from a cell phone or other nearby phone.
  • If you need service or other assistance from the Tour, contact host personnel at any stop.

The CBES Bike Tour Oyster Roast is held on Saturday evening after the ride at an antique potato grader shed outside of Eastville.  When patrons arrive, there is a large, open fire burning on which we will later roast the oysters.  People often stand around the fire for conversation and later stand at farm trailers to gorge on oysters.  Music from a local bluegrass band normally fills the barn.  Our menu--served in "courses:--includes:  chips and dips, samplings of a local crabmeat dish and chowders, and, of course, all the oysters you can eat.  A limited amount of beer is available (after all, we can't send you out on the road tipsy) and soft drinks.  And, oh yes, for the oyster squeamish, we have fried chicken and coleslaw--but really, if you don't like oysters....So, bring your oyster knives (we have a few available, if you don't have one) and a glove and plan to arrive between 6:00 and 6:30 so you won't miss the fun.
