"Some ingredients will seem unusual, even disquieting, but I believe it crucial to use whatever elements are
necessary to embody each artist's personal history and creative life and transform them into unusual and
seductive gustatory potions”

Ektoras Binikos

is the founder of ART & MIXOLOGY (www.artandspiritmixology.com) and formerly the Head Mixologist at 3 Star restaurants Aureole and Oceana in NYC.  He is a pioneer and continues to be a creative force in the new American cocktail renaissance.  His award-winning cocktails reflect the pure and natural ethos of our new American global cuisine, featuring fresh, exotic ingredients in surprising combinations.

Born in  Greece and educated in Athens and New York, Ektoras possesses a distinguished background as a multi-media artist that informs his approach to mixology.  To him, the perfect cocktail should please the eye and nose as well as the palate; it should provide a transcendent experience that amazes and excites.  To that end, he immerses himself in the process of creating beautiful and original concoctions that achieve balance between its elements.

Fresh fruit and herbs figure prominently in his creations, lending their flavor, textures and colors through a variety of alchemical techniques.

Ektoras is the recipient of the Grand Prize for the 2005 National Sante/Korbel Brandy Cocktail Challenge with his cocktail "The Yellow Trumpet" and winner of the First Prize for the 2003 National Sante/Dubonnnet Cocktail Challenge with his "Riviera" cocktail.  He has been featured in Sante, Cheers, The Paper, Wine Enthusiast, NY Magazine, Time Out NY, Restaurant Hospitality, the Daily News, Wine Spectator, Food Art and Gourmet.  He is featured in the book "The Spirit of the Cocktail" and in  February 2007 created a birthday cocktail for world-renowned performance artist Marina Abramovic on the occasion of her Anniversary Celebration Gala at the Guggenheim Museum (NYC).

Ektoras is currently working on his latest book The Artist's Cup.  This is a collection of cocktail recipes inspired by 41 extraordinary artists from around the world, from the middle ages to the present.  He is collaborating on this with New York photographer Simon Jutras.   He will be drawing from this collection to conduct his evenings on the 2nd Floor On Clinton.

FURTHER INFORMATION

The 2nd Floor on Clinton becomes part salon, part alchemist's set, part cocktail lounge, as Ektoras unveils the secrets and inspiration behind the libations he concocted to celebrate his 41 chosen artists.

Some selected artists are contemporary like Marina Abramovic and some like Hieronymus Bosch may date from the middle ages, but they all inspired Ektoras to create unforgettable seductive concoctions.

In each cocktail Ektoras' mission is to recreate the individuality and cultural milieu of these artists. His method combines olfactory, visual, chemical, alchemical, biological and astrological principles to achieve the perfect representation. His means may at times seem unorthodox, but the results are undeniably inspired.
