AlexHealthy sex grows from a mutual commitment to recover from sex addiction and build healthy relationships.

Yet knowing what lays the foundation for this kind of addiction is critical in rebuilding neural pathways that make healthy sex possible.

During the first two years of one’s life, the components of eye contact, facial expression, gesture, tone of voice, touch, movement, and empathic interactions profoundly affect the development of an infant’s right brain—the side that includes a complex neural network is concerned with emotions and moods. (These components also affect a child’s muscular activity and coordination.) In addition to functions such as processing social and emotional interactions, learning and memory, reward and pleasure, judging and morality, the right brain is primarily involved in an infant’s ability to form attachments.
It’s also the area of the brain that regulates one’s emotional and physiological states.

••••••••••••

This presentation will be based on the author’s book “Erotic Intelligence: Igniting Hot, Healthy Sex After Recovery From Sex Addiction.”

It will address healthy sex in the second stage of recovery viewing sex as adding to a person’s well being. We will take the stance that exciting, healthy sex comes from being relational and operate from the premise that only through an intimate connection to another can highly erotic, spiritual sex happen. Healthy sex, intimate sex, erotic sex, and sex as a spiritual act develop from honest conversations about difficult topics that grow and strengthen a relationship.

We will examine sex as an essential part of sobriety, personal growth, and development. Questions clinicians and patients often ask will be discussed:

• How do I restore my sexuality as self-care and a connection to another?
• Do my sexual fantasies have a place in my relationship?
• How can sex be exciting again?
• Will I be able to masturbate again?
• How do I talk to my partner about what I like sexually?”

Goal: Participants will be able to define the Four Cornerstones of Intimacy as defined in the book. They will learn to execute these principles with recovering people to build intimacy and identify how these essential building blocks lead to creating a connected, erotic, spiritual, sex life. Clear distinctions will be made between addictive sex, healthy sex, intimate sex, erotic sex, and spiritual sex.

Objectives:

1. Participants will understand and be able to apply the components necessary to create a secure connection between partners through understanding the Four Cornerstones of Intimacy, various recovery tasks, and recommended co-regulatory activities between couples.

2. The chemistry of attraction, process of differentiation, and explanation of how to assist patient’s in evaluating individual and shared values will be delineated and applied to partner-relational sex.

3. Case examples and guidelines for masturbation, fantasy, and role-play sex will be explicitly laid out so the practitioners are clear about what constitutes “hot, healthy sex” (vs. addictive sex) and how these activities can lead to sex as a spiritual act.
