Special "Celebrity" Guest Chef Vel Scott from Vel's Purple Oasis
Vel and her husband, Don Scott, now deceased, have been a power couple in Cleveland for many years, with successful businesses including three nightclubs in the University Circle area.
After Don was diagnosed with high blood pressure, Vel knew they had to make a change in the fatty, salty foods he enjoyed - and so did her customers. Vel visited Africa, China, Italy, and Caribbean and learned their cooking secrets.
In addition to revamping the nightclub's menu, Vel also began educating the public about healthy eating - even hosting a radio show called "Vel's Global Soul." In 2009, Vel decided to use empty lots she owned for gardening. Last year, the Oasis became the home of a straw-bale greenhouse and hosted cooking, permaculture and gardening workshops for members of the community and John Hay High School students. Last summer, Vel shared much of the garden’s produce with neighbors and prepared and served meals at the Ronald McDonald House.
In her own words; “It gave people hope that something is going to happen — something good is going to grow out of an empty lot.”
