Duke Energy’s goal for solid waste minimization and recycling improvement goal was a very prominent and visible component of the Duke Energy Sustainability Plan. In 2008, after an evaluation, it was determined that Duke was recycling approximately 52% of the total non-hazardous waste stream, and a stretch target was created to improve the rate to 62% by year-end 2012. In additional to the many different recycling programs, championed by the business units, the most significant potential improvement opportunity was to find a beneficial reuse for treated and untreated wood waste. Russ Wilkenloh, Duke Energy will share information about a solution Duke Energy found for their wood waste.
