This will be a panel discussion about the ins and outs for surviving a merger or other event that happens so often in today’s corporate structure.  Items that will be discussed include training, networking, rebranding yourself and things to look out for that an event may be happening at your company.   What you can do to make yourself less of a risk in downsizing.

Our Panel Members:

  • Matt Anderson, CFM - Project Manager, Advanced Bio Healing

Matt has been a Facility Manager for over 25 years.  During the course of his career he has worked for General Dynamics, Solar Turbines, and Titan/L-3 communications, Millipore and most recently Shire Regenerative Medicine, formerly Advanced BioHealing.  Matt began his career as an associate facility technician and has worked up through the different engineering levels to become a Director of Facility Services.

Matt has worked on both sides of the merger and acquisition process by disposing of several of the General Dynamics’ divisions, acquiring and consolidating companies within the Titan Corporation until Titan merged with L-3/communications in 2005.  In 2006, Matt was laid off from L-3.

Over the course of his career, he has been laid off from 4 different companies, with one period of unemployment lasting almost 2 years. In his current position, Matt is a Facility Project Engineer with Shire Regenerative Medicine managing new equipment installations, remodels and capital budgets.

  • Glen Best, CFM - FM Professional

Glen started as a chemist for Kelco, a division of Merck in San Diego.  He became a specialist in the use of Kelco’s polymers to thicken oil field drilling fluids.  Sensing he would be asked to transfer to Kelco’s Oil Field Tech Service Lab in Houston, or be laid off, in 1991 Glen became Kelco’s first Facilities and EHS Manager for their site located on Aero Drive.  That same year Glen quickly joined the San Diego Chapter of IFMA, and is currently the thirteenth longest tenured member of the Chapter.

Merck sold Kelco to Monsanto in 1995, and Monsanto sold it to Lehman Brothers in 2000.  With the company downsizing due to declining margins for its products, Glen left in 2002 to become Facilities Manager for Dow Chemical’s biotech campus on Oberlin Drive in Sorrento Mesa.  In 2007, Glen was asked to sell the property and do a partial leaseback for the biotech business.  Dow subsequently decided to spin off the business to venture capitalists, and as a result Glen and his entire staff positions were eliminated in 2008.

Later in 2008, Glen became the Facilities Manager for Raytheon and last year, with declining defense spending impacting Raytheon’s business, Glen was impacted in November by a division-wide Reduction in Force, and as a result he continues to look for his next Facility management opportunity.

  • Debra Gutzmer, CFM - Regional Occupancy Planner, CBRE/Union Bank

Debra L. Gutzmer has over 30 years experience working for high-tech corporations, with experience managing every aspect of facilities, occupancy planning, and client services.  Debra enjoyed 22 years in the Facilities and CRE departments of Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), most recently as the Western Region Facilities Planning and Client Services Manager.  This tenure was cut short as a result of the company outsourcing all the Facilities and CRE functions to Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL).   Debra had a short stint as the Sr. Occupancy Planner on the Union Bank account for JLL- before the Bank awarded the contract to CBRE.  Since, working for three companies in one year, she has had her share of professional ups and downs, interviews, and personal turmoil making her a subject matter expect on the topic of career resiliency, reinventing oneself, and the ever coveted crystal ball!

  • Bob Wiley - FM Professional, Whispering Winds

Bob Wiley has been a longstanding member of IFMA in San Diego, Boston and Denmark (International). He developed and taught a project management class for UCSD Extension when it launched its Facility Management certificate program in conjunction with our chapter. He also served on the Advisory Committee for that UCSD certificate program. He has been a speaker at San Diego IFMA functions on various topics. He has over 30 years of professional Facilities experience ranging from major project management through Global management of facilities operations.

Bob was with IDEC Pharmaceuticals in San Diego in 2003 when a “merger of equals” took place with Biogen Pharmaceuticals based in Cambridge, MA. He was also with HomeFed Bank at the time the San Diego based financial entered conservatorship under the Resolution Trust Corporation during the Savings and Loan crisis.

Bob currently is serving on the Board of Directors and is Vice President for the San Diego IFMA Chapter and is also on the Board of Directors for Whispering Winds Catholic Conference Center near Julian and serves on their Buildings and Grounds Committee doing project management and advising on Facilities related issues. He is also seeking consulting or contract opportunities in Facilities/Project Management.
