Food Security in Times of Climate Change and Price Volatility

Asia is home to 3.3 billion people and 1.8 billion of the world’s poor. Despite rapid economic growth in recent decades, the region remains vulnerable to global shocks. ADB estimates that a 10 percent increase in domestic food prices in Asia could lead to a 2 percentage point increase in poverty incidence, equivalent to pushing 64 million into poverty. The seminar will discuss the web of key challenges and policy issues related to food security and poverty in Asia.

Cyn-Young Park is Assistant Chief Economist and Director of the Economic Analysis and Operations Support Division in the Economics Research Department of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). She has been a main author and contributor to the Asian Development Outlook, Asia Capital Markets Monitor, Asia Economic Monitor, and Asia Bond Monitor.  She has written and lectured extensively about Asian economies and financial markets.

Professor Nygaard is an agricultural economist whose career has focused on agricultural development and rural livelihoods. He has served as Director of the Aga Khan Foundation’s Rural Development Programs, Director of International Programs at the International Food Policy Institute in DC, and Regional Representative, Ford Foundation in Cairo, Egypt. He also worked at Winrock International, and the International Center for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas in Aleppo, Syria.
