Special Movie Preview: "Won't Back Down"

"WonWe’re pleased to invite you to a special preview screening of a new film that all Americans will be talking about soon: Won’t Back Down. Inspired by true events, this is the unlikely story of two working moms (played by Academy Award nominated actresses Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis) who battle entrenched and powerful special interests to transform their children’s failing inner city school. They share a simple belief: “If you can’t beat the system, change it.” The all-star cast also includes Rosie Perez, Holly Hunter, and Ving Rhames.

Won’t Back Down is released by Walden Media, the same production house that created nationally released hit films like The Chronicles of Narnia, Bridge to Terabithia, and Because of Winn-Dixie. Won’t Back Down has been described as gripping, emotional, and entertaining. Important for those of us interested in improving education in America, Won't Back Down has the potential to put the issue of school choice front and center in our national dialogue, and at kitchen tables across America.

Join Pioneer for a special PREVIEW screening of Won’t Back Down on Thursday, September 27th, at 5:30 pm. Location:  AMC Loews Boston Common, 175 Tremont Street, Boston, MA  02111

For two decades, Pioneer Institute has been at the forefront of education reform, as an early concept developer of charter schools, a trainer for charter entrepreneurs, a driver behind the regulations that made Massachusetts’ rigorous charter approval and accountability processes national models.  The Institute has long campaigned for high-quality academic content and accountability for all schools and teachers, so that our kids reach their potential.

While necessary, high-quality content and accountability are not enough to make sure kids are getting a great education.  After all, government can decide on how we define content and accountability.  To make sure we are all being honest about the quality of our schools, we need a voice outside the four walls of district and principal’s offices.

The choice exercised by parents is the most important accountability measure for our schools. With very few exceptions, parents want the best for their children—and too many of them have no choice in whether their children attend a failing public school.

That’s why Pioneer champions a menu of school options for the parents of the Commonwealth, including charters, interdistrict choice (including METCO), vocational-technical schools, and private school choice.  Across the nation, the education reform movement is catching, from the Katrina-ravaged New Orleans to the District of Columbia – parents and students are taking action to demand better schools.
