The Tulane School of Social Work is proud to present this 6-hour CEU event by Denise Gour, LCSW, entitled "Mindfulness Practices for Working with Individuals and Families Impacted by Addictions." The workshop will be held on Friday, Nov. 30 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Kendall Cram Ballroom located on the second floor of Lavin-Bernick Center. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m., and participants will received 7 CEUs for attending.

This experiential workshop introduces social workers, mental health professionals, and addiction counselors to practices that cultivate mindfulness in daily living for individuals and families as a means for supporting recovery and preventing the relapse of addictive behaviors. Objectives include:

  • Demonstrate an intellectual and experiential understanding of family-centered addiction treatment and relapse prevention principles and the role of mindfulness in both;
  • Understand the integration of family-centered relapse prevention treatment and mindfulness techniques;
  • Practice core mindfulness exercises for addiction treatment and relapse prevention;
  • Be familiar with clinical and logistical issues that arise when integrating mindfulness practices; and
  • Experience and appreciate the necessity of personal practice for successful delivery of a mindfulness based treatment modality.
Denise Gour, LCSW, said that her therapeutic focus helps people reduce their stress and learn to navigate adversity with more self-compassion, clarity and ease. She has more than 15 years experience working in Portland, Ore., with adults and families facing complex issues related to parenting, relationships, depression and anxiety, and recovery from addictions. She also offers presentations and trainings for health care providers, schools, and businesses interested in using mindfulness and stress reduction skills in the workplace. She earned her MSW from Portland State University in 1996.
