An Introduction to Exporting

The World Trade Center Kentucky in cooperation with partner trade agencies and supporting sponsors are hosting an Export 101 program for individuals interested in learning the major facets of exporting. 

Target audience:

Companies - The WTC-KY is targeting Individuals new to exporting for attendance at this program. This group would include company representatives from the sales, marketing, financial, logistics and distribution functions. By attending this program, we hope to shorten the lead time from decision to export until actual export of product(s).

Economic Development - In addition to companies, we are also encouraging economic development representatives from the Chambers of Commerce and regional/city/local economic development departments to participate in this program.    

Objectives:

  • Participants will understand the power of trade for US businesses (e.g. impact on employment)
  • Participants will understand the current state of trade in Kentucky and the region
  • Participants will learn important concepts related to 1) global market research 2) international payment/export financing 3) export compliance and logistics 4) international legal and tax considerations

General Format:

Program will be hosted from 8:30 am until 4 pm (8:00 - 8:30 am - registration and networking). We will break for lunch from 11:45 - 1 pm and have two 15 minute breaks throughout the day.  

Specific format and agenda:

  • Registration and networking (8:00 - 8:30)
  • Introduction  (8:30 – 9:00) – Presentation on current state of trade in the region
  • Export readiness (9:00 – 9:30 am) – Overview of major factors that contribute to export success
  • Market research (9:30 – 10:00) - Overview of market research tools and services from U.S. Department of Commerce
  • Break (10:00 - 10:15)
  • International payment (10:15– 11:45) – Overview of payment instruments, due diligence and export financing
  • Lunch (11:45 – 1:00)
  • Export Logistics (1:00 – 2:00) - Overview of export procedures from a logistics perspective
  • International Legal  and Tax Considerations (2:00 – 3:00) - Understand the legal responsibilities and tax obligations for exporting your product
  • Break (3:00 – 3:15)
  • Company Panel (3:15 – 3:45) - Hear from companies in the region which are successful exporters
  • Q & A (3:45 - 4:00)
