School Health Guidelines

Overview

This is one of 4 Training Tools for Healthy Schools: Promoting Health and Academic Success workshops that is coming to Ohio this fall from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Schools play a critical role in improving the dietary and physical activity behaviors of children and adolescents. Schools can create environments supportive of students’ efforts to eat healthy and be active by implementing policies and practices that support healthy eating and regular physical activity and by providing opportunities for students to learn about and practice these behaviors.

CDC synthesized research and best practices related to promoting healthy eating and physical activity in schools, culminating in nine guidelines. The guidelines serve as the foundation for developing, implementing, and evaluating school-based healthy eating and physical activity policies and practices for students.

Each of the nine guidelines is accompanied by a set of implementation strategies developed to help schools work towards achieving each guideline. Although the ultimate goal is to implement all nine guidelines included in this document, not every strategy will be appropriate for every school, and some schools, due to resource limitations, might need to implement the guidelines incrementally.

Objectives

Participants will participate in a skill-building, engaging workshop and by the end of the day, they will be able to:
  • Explain CDC's School Health Guidelines tool
  • Discuss how the SHG tool may be used to support school health policies, programs and practices at the local or state level
  • Create an action plan to further local or state school health programs

Target Audience

Health/PE teachers, school nurses, school administrators, state/local agency staff, district coordinators, university professionals, parents, wellness team members, community members, parent volunteers, and after/before school program coordinators.

 About the Speaker

BHSA is pleased to welcome Jess Lawrence to Ohio.

With a BS in Health Education from Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY, and a Masters of Science in Education/Curriculum and Instruction from Portland State University, Jess Lawrence began her career as a middle school health teacher in Portland, Oregon.

In 2003 Jess was presented with an opportunity to extend her passion and knowledge beyond the classroom, She became the Health Education Curriculum Specialist at the Department of Education and worked closely with a team of specialists from both the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) and the Department of Human Services (DHS) to implement coordinated school health. In 2005, she was selected to be one of 17 people nationally to help revise and develop the National Health Education Standards, which were published early in 2007.

After working for Oregon Department of Education for three years, Jess decided to pursue a career as an education consultant in 2007 because it would gave her the opportunity and flexibility to provide targeted, strategic and comprehensive support to school health organizations. She is the Director of Cairn Consulting and she is an exceptional speaker, presenter and facilitator. Jess's work includes facilitating meetings, workshops and strategic plans, presenting and speaking at conferences, and developing curriculum and materials specifically around school health issues. She is a CDC/DASH trainer for CDC's Health Education Curriculum Analysis Tool (HECAT), School Health Index (SHI) and School Health Guidelines (SHG).
