Building Healthy Communities - A Night Honoring the Life and Work of Mark Schneider

Keynote Speaker:  Richard J. Jackson, MD, MPH, Professor and Chair, UCLA School of Public Health, and host and narrator of “Designing Healthy Communities” television series

10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania is once again presenting its signature program, the Commonwealth Awards, to honor and celebrate great projects and the people who make them happen.

Please join us in celebrating the impact and accomplishments of Mark Schneider on December 5, 2012, with our special guest speaker, Dr. Richard J. Jackson, the co-author of the book and host/narrator of the public television series, “Designing Healthy Communities.”

The Life’s Work of Mark C. Schneider—Building Healthy Communities
Our program this year will depart from the established format (of recognizing multiple submissions from across the state) to emphasize the theme of “Building Healthy Communities” and honor the life’s work of our late friend and Chairman, Mark Schneider.  Important Smart Growth projects that Mr. Schneider participated in will be presented by partners that know them and their impact best.  In addition, our highest individual award, the “Friend of Pennsylvania” Award, will be presented to Mark posthumously and hereafter shall be renamed the “Mark C. Schneider Memorial Friend of Pennsylvania” Award in Mark’s honor.  Our Keynote speaker will be Dr. Richard Jackson of the UCLA School of Medicine and Public Health.  Dr. Jackson’s work and television series, “Designing Healthy Communities,” are award-winning and recognized nationally.

This year 10,000 Friends will also honor several southwest Pennsylvania awardees from the first round of the Pennsylvania Community Transportation Initiative (PCTI) funding.  10,000 Friends has worked closely with PennDOT to establish PCTI, a competitive funding program to support and encourage local transportation projects that exemplify the goals of Smart Transportation. Mark Schneider helped develop the vision for PCTI and was one of its chief advocates.  The PCTI awardees demonstrate the importance of infrastructure investment and the benefits for our communities.

Due to the change in format for 2012, there will be *no* call for entries this year.
