SCHEDULE

10:00 - 10:30 a.m.  -- Welcome

10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. -- Drawing and hand lettering with Kris
"I teach 4th-6th grade art for a living. Every year I make my students learn how to create value (the lightness or darkness of an object) using the 4 basic forms. After avoiding shading myself for many, many years I finally realized that if my 10 year old students could successfully shade forms- I could too. My work has blossomed since I took this new direction.

"In this workshop we will draw the 4 basic forms and see how together they make up all the objects around us. We’ll see how picture book illustrators past and present, realistic and graphic, use light and dark to model their characters. We’ll apply what we learn to drawing kids, animals, and buildings.

"In the second part of the workshop we’ll take a look at some popular books that feature different hand lettering techniques and see why they work. Then we’ll use form and text to start our own hand-lettered piece of art."

12:30  - 1:15 p.m. -- Brown Bag lunch and schmooze time

1:15 - 3:15 p.m. --  Collage, acrylics, and mixed media with Mira
"Having taught art for over 20 years from kindergarten to university levels, and taught many now multi-award winning picture book illustrators, I have developed what I call a pedagogy of pleasure where students learn best through pleasure, experimentation, and play. In the first part of our Illustrators' Play Day: Techniques and Materials, we will be exploring the forgiving and fun aspects of acrylics and mixed media to create at least one piece of story art using either a provided prompt or any subject you like. We’ll have juicy materials kits with an assortment of different fine art and commercial papers, collage materials, supplies for making instant styrofoam stamps and I’ll be bringing my own brushes, acrylic paints, gels and mediums, pencils, stamp pads, oil pastels and other materials for you to use. All you need to bring is an openness to play (and your lunch).

"You'll be learning lots of new techniques, including xerox transfer techniques so bring any xerox or laser prints that you might want to transfer. Many of these techniques can also be applied to watercolors. I’ll also be showing inspiring contemporary picture books that use these and similar techniques."

3:15 - 4:00 p.m. -- Show and Tell

 Bring your own lunch.
SCBWI will provide water, an afternoon snack, and your art kit.
