As a valued partner, we invite you to join us for the annual Robert G. Bringle Civic Engagement Showcase and Symposium. This celebratory event gathers community members, IUPUI faculty, staff and students for sharing and recognition of the diverse community engagement activities that take place across Central Indiana. 

 

This year's theme is Our Role in the "Village": Campus and Community Strategies to Support Youth.

The African Proverb, “it takes a village to raise a child”, is one that is referenced in many discussions to describe the importance of collective action in preparing youth to become healthy and productive citizens. The “village” in today’s climate crosses many sectors in our society including businesses, community and faith-based organizations, educational institutions, government, and countless others.  Despite this complexity many, including those in higher education, have taken on the challenge to partner with communities to (re)build the supports that youth need to fare well in our society.  This includes developing programs, interventions, and policies as well as the social networks and infrastructure necessary to sustain youth and families.

Civic Engagement Symposium

This year’s symposium will feature workshops and discussions that highlight campus and community collaborations that yield positive outcomes for youth and families.

This year, in addition to our general call  for posters, the CESS program committee also solicits submissions that address this year's event theme: Our Role in the "Village": Campus & Community Strategies to Support Youth .

Recognition and Awards Program

The Civic Engagement Showcase and Symposium concludes with a recognition of  individuals and partner organizations who have contributed to IUPUI's civic engagement activities in the past year.

Keynote Speaker: This year's keynote speaker is Dr. Henry Louis Taylor, Jr. 
Dr. Henry Louis Taylor, Jr., is one of the nation’s leading authorities on distressed
neighborhoods and inner city development. A historian and urban planner, this internationally known scholar is a full professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University at Buffalo. He is coordinator of the Department’s Community Development and Urban Management Specialization and is the founding director of the University at Buffalo Center for Urban Studies (CENTER), a research, neighborhood planning and community development institute that focuses on the regeneration of distressed communities.

The Program Agenda includes:

• Remarks by Dr. Robert G. Bringle, Senior Scholar, Center for Service and Learning and Professor Emeritus of Psychology, IUPUI
  
• Recognition of the Chancellor's Civic Engagement Award Winners for Faculty and Community Partner and Nan Bohan Award Recipient
  
• Recognition of IUPUI's Community Partner organizations who have worked closely with IUPUI faculty, staff and students in the past academic year
• Awarding of the 2013 William M. Plater Civic Engagement Medallions for graduating students with a Bachelors or Masters degree who have demonstrated exemplary commitment to their communities while at IUPUI
