Tarquin MEI Prize 2013

Tarquin and MEI are pleased to offer a 2013 prize for post-16 school, college and FE college students.

The competition is to design a video, animation, GeoGebra file or some other electronic artefact that communicates mathematical ideas being used to solve an engineering or other practical problem of some kind.

A prize of books to the value of £100 will be awarded for the winning entry, together with a cheque for £100. In addition, the winners’ school or college will receive materials to the value of £400 from Tarquin. Every entrant will receive a voucher entitling them to discount from the Tarquin website. The voucher will be issued after 1 January 2013 and will be valid for use in 2013 only.

An entry may be designed by an individual student or by a group of students.  Each entry should make clear how mathematics has been used to solve a problem.  The entry should be designed to convey the way mathematics has been used as clearly as possible.

Please note that it may be possible to extend the work that goes into the entry into a larger project that could be used as part of the requirements for the Extended Project qualification.

Entries must be the students’ original work.  Students who enter will be required to sign a declaration that this is the case.  No image used should be protected by copyright.

The best entries will be:

  • mathematically accurate
  • clear
  • interesting
  • creatively designed
  • about a problem context that matters to young people
  • likely to attract school/college students to take mathematics, engineering, or related subjects at university

Entries may be designed in any readily available software. They must be submitted so that they are viewable in one of the following formats:

  • MS Office
  • Adobe Acrobat
  • GeoGebra
  • Java
  • Flash

If you are interested in taking part, please register your interest through the link below. You will be required to submit your name, the name of your school or college and sponsoring teacher, and a valid email address. Teachers may register interest in order to be kept up to date with the process.
