The competition is open to fine art photographers aged 18 or older working in any medium (digital or analog, color or monochrome), and using any printing technique - we care about well-done art more than the specific medium, technique or format. Fine Art Photography of any subject is welcome; there is no required theme for entries.

Finalists for the Competition will make up the May 2013 Exhibition at ArtSpace Herndon in the main Nelson J. and Katherine Friant Post Gallery. Finalists will be notified on 15 March 2013 via email.

Juror: Barry Schmetter
Barry Schmetter is a Washington DC based photographer and artist using historic photographic processes as a means to explore memory, forgetting, and other human cognitive processes. He frequently uses large format cameras and antique lenses dating to the early history of photography in his work. He also teaches workshops and seminars in alternative and historic photographic processes—most recently for the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Frederick, Maryland Historical Society. He was the event director of Artomatic 2012, the largest independent art and performance exhibition in the Washington area and a founding member of Art Reactor, an art and teaching collective. His work is in private and public collections and was seen in the ABC Television series, Happy Town.
Entry GuidelinesA non-refundable fee of $25 allows entrants to submit up to five (5) images (see below for image format guidelines.)
Submitted photographs must have been taken on or after January 2011, and not have been exhibited at ArtSpace Herndon prior to the show dates.
By submitting images, entrants assert that they are the creators of the submitted artwork and have publishing and exhibition rights and that the artwork does not infringe the copyrights, trademarks, rights of privacy or any other rights of any third parties or of any other person.
Entering the competition is a two step process:
1. Images: All images must be submitted via electronic mail to artspaceherndonphoto@gmail.com by NO LATER THAN 5pm on 8 March 2013.
- All image submissions must be formatted as follows:
- JPEG format
- No greater than 1200 pixels on the longest dimension
- Maximum file size 1MB
- Filename must be in the following format: EntrantInitials-TitleOfArtwork.jpg
- Title of Artwork must match the title given in the entry information
- For example, an entrant with initials PRP and artwork entitled “Guernica” would use the following filename: PRP-Guernica.jpg
2. Registration: The following information must be included to be considered a complete entry:
Registration information can be submitted online or by mail.
- Name and Initials of Entrant (e.g. “Pablo Ruiz Picasso = PRP”)
- Address
- Phone
- Email Address
- For Each Image:
- Title of Artwork
- Year
- Medium of Photograph (required) – e.g. ink jet print, silver gelatin print, cyanotype, etc.
- Dimensions of framed artwork
- Price or “not for sale”
- Online registration and payment: see Register Now button below.
- Mail registration and payment: Mail the above listed information and payment to: P.O. Box 916, Herndon, VA 20172-0916. Mailed entries must be postmarked by March 4th, in order to allow time for them to be received by the entry deadline
Agreement
By entering the competition, the artist agrees to abide by all competition rules and to hold ArtSpace Herndon and the Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts, and their employees and volunteers harmless. Failure to comply with these rules constitutes withdrawal from the competition.
Show Finalists (Exhibitors)
Finalists for the Competition will make up the May 2013 Exhibition at ArtSpace Herndon and will be notified on 15 March 2013 via email. At this time, further information may be gathered regarding the finalist’s entries. ArtSpace Herndon will ask for the entrant’s tax id number/social security number. Note: To keep this information secure, ArtSpace will ask for the entrant to complete an IRS W-9 form which will be turned over to their Treasurer and stored in a secure location.
The dates of the exhibition are: 23 April – 26 May 2013
An opening reception will take place on 27 April 2013 from 7 - 9pm. All entrants and finalists are encouraged to attend as the show prizes will be awarded during the reception.
Exhibition Requirements
Submission of an entry signifies intent to exhibit if selected as a finalist. Finalists who are unable to exhibit the artwork will be disqualified from the competition.
All decisions of the juror are final.
The artist is responsible for delivery and pick up of artwork.
Artwork must be matted and framed or mounted in a manner compatible with the gallery hanging system using wire and screw-eyes. Wire should be mounted about 1/3 of the way down from the top edge of the artwork and be taunt from side to side. No frame-mounted clips will be accepted. ArtSpace must be advised of any unusual installation requirements.
All artwork exhibited will be available for sale at a price of the Artist’s choosing or marked as “Not for Sale.”
When delivered, artwork must be labeled on the back of the piece with the artist’s name, title, medium, and price.
ArtSpace Herndon retains the right to disallow any artwork for which the entry image substantially misrepresents the actual artwork.Artwork will be displayed until the end of the show. Buyers will be asked to delay pickup of the artwork until the end of the show.
While ArtSpace will make every effort to secure all artwork in the show, the artwork is exhibited at the artist’s risk.
ArtSpace Herndon will retain a commission of 25% for any artwork sold during the show.
The artist grants ArtSpace Herndon permission to use images for publicity purposes, including postcards and advertisements.
About ArtSpace Herndon
ArtSpace Herndon is a community art center created by the Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts that includes a 1,700 sq. ft art gallery and two classrooms for classes and small group sessions with artists. Exhibits in the Post Gallery change monthly and include regionally, nationally, and internationally known artists in a variety of mediums. The exhibiting artists are chosen from submissions or invited by the Art Programming Committee. ArtSpace works with local artists to offer fine art classes to the public. The space is also available for rent by businesses and individuals for meetings and private parties. ArtSpace is staffed by volunteers and supported by grants and donations. ArtSpace is operated by the Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts, as 501(c)3 organization.
