Resolutions are nice, but action is better.  Start the new year with a gift to yourself: investing in your future by learning new skills and addressing old issues, tackling three big issues that are more manageable than you think.  Take one, pick two or take all three for a great deal -- it's just the thing to make 2013 huge.

The Workshops

The Social Studio:  You're a great teacher.  But no matter what you teach, if you offer private lessons, turnover is one of your biggest challenges, often creating a "revolving door" marketing churn that requires a constant stream of new students.  But what if you were to hang on to more of your existing ones?  We'll talk about the power of social media sites such as Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Pinterest and more, not as social playgrounds, but powerful business tools that will help you build what marketing guru calls a "tribe", a cohesive community around your teaching studio.  By rethinking the way you relate to your students and offering added value by connecting them to each other as well as to you, they'll be more likely to stay longer and to increase their referrals to you, significantly improving your bottom line.  (You'll even have fun while you do it.)  We'll help you assess which tools will work for your personality and meet your students' needs, and show you easy ways to find great content and minimize the time it takes to keep your feeds fresh.  You can start right away, building your following and maintaining ties to some members of your tribe, even after they've stopped attending lessons.  It's easier than you think, and will help put teaching success well within your grasp.

Quick Web There is no longer any doubt:  you must have a website.  If you want work, clients or gigs, your basic professional profile and contact information must be easy to find and accessible at all times.  However, SO many artists, teachers and even small ensembles go without a site of their own, sometimes for years, because they're intimidated or fear that the cost is too high.  We'll show you how to choose and use the tools and services that are already available for very little money.  You'll learn what the parts of a website are so you know what to do next, how to choose the best tool/platform for you and your budget, assess what materials you need to find or create (bio, headshot, etc.) and lay out a preliminary design that you can take home and put to good use.  You'll end up organized and ready to dive in, and will know more for that day when you do hire a professional designer.  But for now, we'll help you eradicate your remaining excuses, and get your face, your music, your product and your message online -- if you follow through, you can be up and running in less than 24 hours.

Time Management:  When you work for yourself, you have to stay organized, but there is no perfect system that works for everyone.  However, because there are so many systems, the self-employed artist is often at a loss regarding how to get started:  "Should I put everything in paper lists, or keep it online?  Do I need to get trained in a specific system, or should I wing it and come up with something on my own?  Should I just give up, and go with my own creative flow?"  We'll review several effective approaches to setting up your independent workday and marking your own progress.  You'll be able to look at them realistically for their fit to your needs and personality, and will leave with tools to work with on your own.  This introductory workshop could be just the kick in the butt you need to get your year going.  Isn't a little sanity worth two and a half hours of reflection?

Your Instructor

Lauri D. Goldenhersh is the founder and owner of Lauri's List, and has been teaching and working as an independent artist in multiple fields for twenty years.  A presenter and organizer of many types of events and programs, Lauri's experience in the nonprofit, educational, corporate and independent sectors lends a broad view to her teaching and mentoring activities, working with creative entrepreneurs of all types and nurturing their own capacity for growth and success.  This particular series is the dream of a decade, in the knowledge that individual artists are vastly undersupported in their respective business endeavors, and that even a little focus and organizing can make all the difference.

Lauri's List

The List started in 2002 as a simple distribution list in an email program, but has grown into the premier online community for classical vocal professionals in Southern California, now located at LaurisList.com.  Part job-hunting tool, part networking group, part mentoring engine and resource generator, the Lauri's List Team works tirelessly to support the arts through the singers it serves.  Although the site itself is largely focused on singers, conductors, accompanists and composers, this passionate mission means offering training opportunities to all sorts of independent artists, building individual networks andas well as contracting and publicity services, all designed to help connect singers, conductors, accompanists and composers.
