Learning Objectives:                                           By participating in this symposium you will be able to:

  • learn how to create prevention plans for common triggers to meltdowns
  • understand key components of social skills training based on outcome research
  • identify proactive anti-bullying strategies
  • explain when bullying and harassment give rise to legal claims 
  • learn about autism-related health disparities in our country
  • describe the role that culture, language, and health literacy play in sustaining those disparities
  • learn about different programs that aim to close the communication gap in order to decrease the disparity
  • learn perspectives of parents living with ASD
  • learn how to develop and integrate iPad technology into daily routines
  • identify the reasons why problem behavior occurs
  • learn to implement strategies at home to produce effective behavior change and decrease problem behavior
  • learn a simple data collection procedure to assess whether strategies at home are effective
  • define a transition plan and content areas to be included
  • define a functional curriculum and content areas that should be incorporated

Continuing Education Credits:   

Nurses: Children’s Specialized Hospital is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by New Jersey State Nurses Association, an accredited approver, by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.  Up to 6.33 nursing contact hours will be offered.

Completion Requirements: Participants are expected to be present for the entire program and participate in case study discussion and program evaluation.  Individuals who are not present for the full program will not be offered nursing contact hours.  No partial credit will be provided.Other participants will receive a certificate of attendance.
