FMST Quilt Reception

Thursday, January 17, 2013Clingman

FMST Logo

Come see the award-winning quilt depicting 14 landmarks along the MST trail.  These quilt panels are amazing works of art, and represent the beauty of the trail in an unexpected and inventive way.  Help us thank the quilters for their unique dedication to the MST!

Join us to view the quilt on Thursday, January 17th, in a reception at the Natural Gallery, in the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, (11 West Jones Street, Raleigh).  The reception is from 5:30 to 7 p.m.  Please enter through the museum store on the ground level and take the stairs to the gallery on the mezzanine level. Refreshments will be provided, including beer donated by Big Boss Brewery.

14 different mileposts along the Mountains-to-Sea Trail were chosen as inspiration for the quilted panels.   Trail segments represented artistically include: Clingman’s Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains, Oconaluftee River in Cherokee, Waterrock Knob on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Mount Mitchell State Park,  Linville Gorge in the Pisgah National Forest, Flat Top Manor on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Blowing Rock, Pilot Mountain State Park, West Point on the Eno River, Falls Lake, Glencoe Mill Village on the Haw River, Tryon Palace in New Bern, Neusiok Trail in the Croatan National Forest, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, and Jockey’s Ridge State Park at Nags Head.

The fourteen panel quilt won  “Best of Show” at the Durham Orange Quilt Show in Durham, NC at the American Tobacco Campus from October 19-21, 2012 and will be entered in the Atlantic Quilt Festival in Hampton, Virginia in March.

The museum stays open until 9 p.m. on Thursdays, so it's also a great time to visit the rest of the museum.  If you cannot make the reception, the quilt will be on display for the entire month of January.

Please RSVP so we know how many people to expect.  Thanks!
