Stop by for one or more workshops/classes designed to improve resilience through mindfulness, compassion, understanding, and balance. There will be four sessions, each 90 minutes. Bring a lunch, or food will be available for purchase before the Keynote Presentation. You are welcome to attend part of the day or all of it!

9:00-10:30 (for adults)

Compassionate Communication (Marcia Christen)
Whether you're parenting a teenager or an infant, learning about Compassionate Communication (also known as Nonviolent Communication or NVC) will help you make connection your top priority, model compassion in your family and inspire open dialogue that promotes mutual understanding and long lasting relationships.

Marcia Christen, Certified Trainer with the Center for Nonviolent Communication with over 20 years experience in parent education and communication, is passionate about sharing what has been so meaningful to her as a parent of 3 teenagers.

Your Brain on Fire: Managing Passion (Kathie McCarthy)
Passion means strong interest and strong emotion.We’ll identify our passionate interests - what sets your heart on fire? We’ll recognize our strong emotions - what fires you up?We’ll learn to feed the fires that nurture us and tame the fires that burn us using inner imagery and mindfulness exercises.

Kathie McCarthy, MA,LMP, understands the interplay between our bodies, our minds and our deepest longings. She counsels parents and youth and teaches at Hyla Middle School and Grace Episcopal Church. She is proud of her two fledged young adults.

Parenting Mindfully (Jen Breen)
Hear stories, learn tools and techniques that will help you become more mindful - mind full of the present moment.  A resourceful discussion and reflection on how to give "presence" to ourselves and our children. It could be our greatest gift! 

Jen Breen lives on Bainbridge Island with her husband Tom and four children and teaches yoga and mindfulness to moms, dads, grandpas, grandmas, teens and kids.

Crafting Resilience in Ourselves and Our Families (Lailey Jenkins)
Living with stress is a given. Learning to be resilient is a necessity for our children and families. This session shares ideas on inoculating to failure and ways to craft resilience where and when you need it.

Lailey Jenkins, LICSW, is a psychotherapist and  creativity coach on a mission to help clients hone their resilience and tap their creative potential so they can lead more authentic connected lives.

Yoga for Teens (Katie Zonoff)
Need more balance, more flexibility, more strength? Want to sleep better, stress less, and have more energy? Yoga is more than exercise for your body -- it’s a way to bring happiness, fun, and a sense of ease to your life. Beginners are welcome.

Katie Zonoff teaches Humanities at Bainbridge High School, and leads yoga and other classes at Bainbridge Yoga House as well.

Understanding the Teen Brain (Elizabeth Turner)

The latest research on the neurobiology of the teen mind shows us a stage of dynamic development that is wrought with both extreme vulnerability and extraordinary promise. This workshop will give a clear and useful overview of the distinctive features of of the teen brain - focusing concerns such as addictions, motivation, stress, sleep, emotionality, planning and risk-taking. It will also cover the idiosyncratic strengths of the adolescent mind and offer strategies for harnessing its astonishing potential for learning, creativity and relationship.

Elizabeth Turner, MSW, LICSW, is a psychotherapist, consultant, and founder of the Bodhi Center for Psychotherapy, Mindfulness and Education on Bainbridge Island.

Finding Calm- Mindfully Navigating Stress (Sue Steindorf)
Simply slowing and deepening our breath can shift us from stress to calm in seconds; it is an accessible tool that is always with us.  We will experience a variety of relaxation and restorative practices that can replace sleep and create peace.  Moving from stress to calm can be a few breaths away!

Sue Steindorf is a physical therapist and yoga teacher working to help people of all ages find their potential with and through their bodies.  She lives on Bainbridge with her two teenage children and husband.
