Each year, on the first weekend of May, as spring fully takes over, the Rx Steering Committee, a program of United Methodist Volunteers In Mission, North Central Jurisdiction offers a training / learning event for medical volunteers called the Rx Consultation. It is typically hosted by a United Methodist Church actively engaged in mission. Over the past 9 years, we have moved it around the North Central Jurisdiction trying to give as much exposure as possible in all of our 11 Conferences. In 2014 we are slated to be in the West Ohio Conference.

We will be adding more pictures and information on speakers and workshops as it comes available!

We will be collecting UMCOR Health Kits for the Midwest Mission Distribution Center to pick up.  Please start collecting them now!

Judy Bruun and Jody Pratt are also asking for help with these medical supplies for the July medical mission to Peru: small soaps/shampoos, nail clippers, and bandaids.

If any medical teams would like some of the diapers being sewn out of t-shirts - please let me know so I can help get them to you at this event, write Lorna Jost.

 Plenary Speakers

Patricia MagyarUMCOR Health, will be with us.  She will speak to us Friday evening on her current work for UMCOR Health.  Patricia has been very involved in Parish Nurse activities and Community Based Primary Health Care efforts globally (CBPHC).

Dr. Roger Boe, pediatrician, a long time participant in the Rx Consultation will present his experience as an Individual Volunteer at Maua Hospital in Kenya.  Roger has been on numerous medical missions and writes extensively for the Mission Volunteers Medical Blog.  Roger and his wife are from Pocatello, ID and spent several months in Kenya in the spring of 2011.

RB

Rev. Tom Heaton, JoAna Dwyer, and Cindy Ceballos will be our featured Skype presenters. Tom is the director of Mission Guatemala and is from the Indiana Conference.  JoAna is the director of ODIM (Organization for the Development of the Indigenous Maya), also in Guatemala. Cindy along with her husband is a GBGM missionary in Panama and she promotes medical teams.  Each of these persons will do their best to influence you to take a medical mission to their site in the near future!  And they will tell you how the United Methodist connection is working in their area.

Travelogue Presenters - Friday Evening

Dr. Sang Lee, Detroit Conference, Medical mission to Bangladesh in partnership with the GBGM Mission Initiatives.

Teresa Miller, West Michigan, veteran leader, will present unique ideas she implemented on her recent medical mission to Nicaragua.

Teresa has worked as a Labor and Delivery Nurse for 31 years, but her true passion is taking medical teams to Nicaragua.  For the past 12 years she has lead 2-3 teams a year into rural Nicaragua.  The teams have traveled in a variety of planes, trucks, vans, and boats to go into areas needing to see Gods love at work through providing medical care.

Jody Pratt, West Michigan, and Judy Bruun, Wisconsin, on their medical mission to Peru.

Judy and little friend Percy - a 2 ½ year old boy that needs surgery for Esophageal Atresia.    I have several doctors from Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee that are willing to take him.  His appointment to see the doctor in Lima is April 30th, so it will be a long wait.

Chuck Garrigues, Wisconsin, presentation of their Honduras mission activity.

Some Notes About the Workshops & Leaders

# 2.  Packing It ALL In! - Teresa Miller (W MI) - Yes you can live out of carryon luggage for a 10-12 day mission trip!  The more you take the harder it is for the people hosting you.  Keep it simple, unpack and leave more at home.  Come to my class and learn how to pack!

# 4.  Incorporating disability work into the medical mission team - Rev. Debbie Hills, Deacon, Physical Therapist.   Rev. Hills brings nearly 35 years of experience as a physical therapist working directly with individuals and families affected by disability to the mission field. Rev. Hills has developed and leads a local outreach project called Ramps of Hope that provides residential accessible ramps for persons in need. This program continues to grow and currently has more than 25 churches actively reaching out to their neighbors with help and hope.

# 10. Spiritual Formation Tools for mission teams (& other small groups) - Connie Ziegler, WI. Connie Ziegler has been a life-long United Methodist. She was a member of the Joyful Jesters Clown Ministry troupe in the 1990's and early 2000's and became a certified lay speaker in 2000. She has served on almost all church committees, has been the lay member to annual conference and has been a member of the Wisconsin Conference Spiritual Formation Resource Team since 2011.
