Brylyne Chitsunge is an internationally acclaimed expert and facilitator of the Nigeria-South Africa Group on Agriculture. Dr. Chitsunge has been a tireless advocate for farmers in her native South Africa for many years, traveling the world to discuss issues such as sustainable agriculture, climate change, and supporting women farmers. In the fall of 2011, Chitsunge addressed the Global Science Conference on Climate-Smart Agriculture about the role of the farmer in addressing climate change.
A dynamic and inspiring activist, Dr. Chitsunge counts herself among the 70 percent of farmers who are women in South Africa. Despite the challenges facing women farmers in her country, she was able to buy her own land and works as a farmer and breeder of Kalahari Red goats, Nguni cattle, free range poultry, indigenous pigs and most recently Tilapia fish. Dr. Chitsunge feels strongly that agriculture can serve as an economic engine to combat poverty in developing nations. However, farmers like her need the support structures, learning tools and networks to do it. As Dr. Chitsunge put it: "My entry in this business was driven primarily by anger at the inability of many of my contemporaries to see the value in agriculture as a business and a critical part of nation building."
