Oyster Reef Construction & Restoration
Morris Landing Clean Water Preserve, Holly Ridge
Saturday, August 10, 2013
10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The N.C. Coastal Federation is seeking volunteers to construct an oyster reef at the Morris Landing Clean Water Preserve on Stump Sound. Restoration efforts will be divided into two sessions: a morning session from 10 a.m. to noon and an afternoon session from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteers are welcome to attend one or both sessions.
Volunteers will be placing oyster shell and marl bags in the water and installing plants along the shoreline to build the reef and restore salt marsh habitat. Bags will be carried and hauled from the stockpile area down to the shoreline during low tide. Then the bags will be stacked in the water to form new reefs. Federation staff will also pull seine nets and create touch tanks alongside volunteers during lunch. Lunch is provided. This event is suitable for all ages.
At the event, volunteers will be able to join the federation for a special discounted membership price of $15!
