School Based Health Centers:
Where Health and Education Intersect

The Connecticut Association of School Based Health Centers is proud to present the following presentation and workshops:

Keynote Presentation:
Strengthening the Virtuous Circle between Educational Achievement and Health

Dr Nicholas Freudenberg is a distinguished professor of Public Health at the City University of New York School of Public Health at Hunter College. Dr Freudenberg has studied health disparities in urban settings for more than thirty years.  He has worked with advocates, elected officials and professional organizations to develop policy recommendations to improve the health of urban populations. In 2007, Dr Freudenberg gained national attention with the publication of his article “Reframing School Dropout as a Public Health Issue”.  In 2010 he was the recipient of the Haven Emerson Lifetime Achievement in Public Health award.

In this keynote address, Dr Freudenberg will point out that better health improves educational achievement, and more education offers lifetime health protection.  Despite this virtuous circle, school and health professionals often find it difficult to work across systems and disciplines.  This presentation explores the rationale for viewing school completion as a public health issue and examines practical strategies by which educators and health professionals can work together to improve school completion rates.
