1973-2013: 40 years of Prenatal Alcohol and FASD

 40th Anniversary Professional Summit

In 1973, Drs. Kenneth Jones, David Smith and others published two clinical reports regarding Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). These seminal articles began an accumulation of scientific evidence lasting the past 40 years. A wealth of knowledge on the nature of prenatal alcohol exposure, the underlying mechanisms of damage, its specificity, concurrent risk factors, and the clinical distinction of alcohol-related difficulties has been generated.

Goals and Objectives:  Attendees will be able to:
  1. Describe the history and international research regarding prenatal alcohol exposure and FASD;
  2. Explain the damage to the brain from prenatal alcohol exposure;
  3. Understand the gender related issues and interventions for women who use alcohol prenatally;
  4. Recognize the most recent findings in the special topic areas of nutrition, intervention with young children, and justice issues

Who should attend: Physicians, medical students, nurses, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, allied health personnel, addiction prevention and treatment providers, child welfare, administrators, school personnel, legal and justice systems personnel, families and individuals with FASD, as well as professionals who work with families.

CEUs applied for:   Determination of CME credits for physicians is pending. Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey-- Center for Alcohol Studies awards 13.25 Continuing Educational  hours for the educational time in this summit.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                This summit will provide approved continuing education hours for recertification to New Jersey Licensed Social Workers, Licensed Professional Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, LCADC/CADC, Teachers, and National Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselors.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Nurses who complete the program will be awarded 13.25 Nursing Contact Hours.

The Southern N J Perinatal Cooperative is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by New Jersey State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission On Accreditation P# P106-11/12-15
