ICD-9 CM Home Care Diagnosis Coding

June 26, 2013: Beginner to Pre-Intermediate Level

June 27, 2013: Intermediate Level with             Introduction to ICD-10

With ICD-10-CM implementation to begin October 1, 2014, the home health industry must make sure that their currrent ICD-9-CM coding practices yield the highest accuracy for optimal payments, coding compliance and audit/survey success.

This 2-day program will offer ICD-9-CM coding instructions to the basic/pre-intermediate level coder, update the skills of a more experienced coder and/or prepare participants for the HCS-D Coding Certification Exam. It will also provide instructions on coding changes for the M1024 payment diagnnosis, as well as application of the guidelines to sample home health scenarios including ICD-10-CM codes.

SPEAKER: Judy Adams, RN, BSN, HCS-D, HCS-O, AHIMA approved ICD-10-CM Trainer is the President and owner of Adams Home Care Consulting, Inc. She is a full Board member for the Board of Medical Specialty Coding & Compliance. Her 25 years experiences includes providing operational and clinical consultative services to many home care and hospice organizations, as well as teaching teleconferences and workshops on OASIS, ICD9 Coding, Home Health PPS and other home care related topics for individual agencies, state associations and national organizations.

Day 1 Basic - Pre-Intermediate Coding: Wednesday, June 26 (8:00am-4:30pm)                                    

 OBJECTIVES:  Registration is from  7:30am - 8am

  1. Identify the roles of the coder in home health care.
  2. Identify the 3 distinct parts of the ICD-9-CM Coding Manual.
  3. Describe 3 conventions for coding for ICD-9-CM Coding.
  4. Identify a minimum of four general coding guidelines for coding.
  5. Describe the process of selecting and sequencing diagnoses including 2013 coding changes for M1024 (payment diagnosis).
  6. Describe the basics of HH PPS.
  7. Describe basic rules governing the use V-codes.
  8. Apply the correct coding principle to diabetic sample situations.
  9. Apply coding guidelines to common leg ulcers.

Day 2 Intermediate Coding: Thursday, June 27 (8:00am-4:30pm)                                                           

OBJECTIVES: Registration is from  7:30am - 8am

  1. Describe 4 basic differences between ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM. 
  2. Demonstrate appropriate code selection and sequencing for a variety of cardiopulmonary conditions.
  3. Demonstrate proper code selection and sequencing for neoplasms and associated conditions.
  4. Apply correct code selection and sequencing in a variety of orthopedic case examples. 
  5. Identify the proper application of coding to a variety of wound applications, including ulcers, routine surgical aftercare vs. complications of surgical wounds, and abcess/cellulitis.
  6. Demonstrate use of complication and late effect codes.
  7. Differentiate superficial injuries and trauma wounds.
  8. Demonstrate appropriate code selection and sequencing for a variety of Psych 1 and 2 diagnoses. 
  9. Illustrate the proper coding of adverse effects versus poisoning using the Table of Drugs and Chemicals.  

For attendees who would like to take the optional HCS-D certification exam on Friday, June 28 (8:30 am Registration followed by 9am - 12pm exam time): 

HCS-D Exam Study Session on June 27, 2013 (5pm - 6pm) No charge for registered exam takers.

CANCELLATION/REFUND POLICY:                                                                                                                Cancellations received in writing 10 days prior to the workshop will be subject to a $50 administrative fee. NO REFUNDS will be issued for cancellations received within 10 days of the workshop. Refunds will not be made for no-shows. However, substitutions are allowed with advance written notice.

CREDITS OFFERED: Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP 15642 for 7 contact hours per day of training for nurses and 7 CEUs per day of training for HCS-D credential maintenance.
