Teaching and Learning
“The brain is not designed for instruction.” If this statement is true, then what IS the brain designed for? To answer that question, this highly interactive session will explore nine principles of brain-based teaching and learning, along with specific implications for training and trainers. Based on the research of Renate and Geoffrey Caine (Making Connections: Teaching and the Human Brain), the presentation will include an array of active learning applications, and will model brain-based modalities that promote participant learning, engagement, and ultimately retention.

Meet the Speaker
Rosanne Vrugtman, Ph.D has recently relocated to Southwest Florida and joined our ASTD Chapter. In addition to an AA and BA in English/Education, Rosanne has earned an MS in HR Management and Development, a MEd and a PhD in Adult Education (2009). Her quantitative dissertation research provided rigorous first-round validation of the Dimensions of Intuition® (DOI®) instrument she developed to predict and measure human intuitive capacity. Rosanne’s professional background includes careers in business, human service and education. She recently retired from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, College of Education where she served in a variety of roles, including ACT Center supervisor and director of the St. Louis Regional Partnership for Excellence in Urban Education.
In 1991, she established Transitions Unlimited, offering an array of customized personal and professional development programs, including her own favorite: “Success from the Inside Out.” She has taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses in writing, psychology, leadership, and career development for DeVry University since 1998. A certified parenting instructor and certified police training specialist, in 1999 she became a certified brain dominance profiler, utilizing the Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument® (HBDI®).
Rosanne has held a variety of leadership positions with professional organizations. She served for six years on the board of the St. Louis Chapter of ASTD and winning two prestigious national ASTD awards during her presidential year (1999). She is currently vice president of Zane Grey’s West Society (ZGWS), serving as editor of the Centennial Edition of Riders of the Purple Sage (2012) and other works. She organized the 2012 Institute for Learning Styles Research (ILSR) International Conference in St. Louis and this year will serve as president of the organization.
